Tuberous nastursiums

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

There are a few Trapeolum (Nastursiums) that produce tubers and live for many years. Here are a couple I grew from seed last year. The seeds came from Chile. They are currently flowering in my cool greenhouse..winter here but summer in Chile and that's the cycle they seem to be on!. This is Tropaeolum brachyceras. I should note this is a vine that twines to 6 feet or more.

A view showing most of the top of the plant. It is twining on an iron trellis. The first flowers are just opening.

and here is T. tricolor...very vibrant but the flowers are quite small.

and a closer view. These don't mind cool temps...mine are growing with night temps to 8 C and days often only 12 C.

Hi Todd,

Guess they wouldn't cope here, would they?

Did you get your seeds from Ursula? She sent me some of this seed but I had no luck. Are there mail order for some of these exotic beauties?

Yes, I got them from Ursula...I though Thompson and Morgan sold them.

Inanda, they don't survive outside here...they go dormant in summer so I leave them dry, then repot and water in the fall so they bloom all winter in the greenhouse.
