Daffodil bulbs rotted

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi,

I got some daffodil bulbs from Scheepers in late Oct. I could not plant them right away, so I stored them in my unheated garage for about a month I believe. When I planted them I noticed that many of them were soft already. So I'm sure they were doomed from the start of planting.

Any idea what may have happened? It was only 10 bulbs but I would like to try again next year. I ordered tulips at the same time and I'm getting virtually 100% success in the same location.

Thanks

What variety was it?

Alexh,

Were the bulbs firm and healthy when you received them ?
If yes, then one of the causes could be the level of humidity in your garage.
The best way to store is in a cool but dry place.

Alexh - I would think it was a humidity problem if the bulbs arrived in good shape. I was surprised in my cool garage the humidity was much higher than I imagined after I put a hygrometer there to get an official reading. You can buy cheap mechanical hygrometers or electronic ones. Also did you store the bulbs loosely outside of the shipping box?

Thanks for the replys -

Variety was a King Alfred. I removed it from the box when receiving it and I believe Scheepers puts them in a breathable bag. The humidity in my house usually runs about 40-65% so I suspect outdoors can be even higher (the garage is probably fairly close to outdoor conditions). I wasn't really aware of the humidity problem. Next time, if I can't plant immediately I'll store in the fridge. I don't know for sure but I suspect they were fine when I received them.

Thanks

I bet that these bulbs had basel rot. Some of the Yellow Daffodils like Carlton or Dutch Master that are sometimes used for King Alfred are prone to basel rot. The humidity is not the cause here.

When I get late bulbs I always pot them up beforeeee storing them. Usually works well. They grow, not rot.
