Hi all, I will try to keep this short, but I could use advice. My 6 yr old daughter found caterpillar on my parsley. I looked it up and sure enough we had eggs, cats and caterpillars of the black swallowtail. They were running out of parsley so I bought more, left some cats on the original plant and quick put together an inside house for the others. They went to school, one even became a butterfly while there. Now...all were set free back in Nov. (I think it was Nov.) 2 are left in the chrysalis and are still on my back porch. Are they ok? If they are when should I start keeping watch for them to emerge?
Thanks,
Chris
What do I do with these Chrysalis?
Keep babysitting them. Many overwinter/diapause. I've had swallowtails take up to six months to emerge from their chrysalis. Matter of fact, just had a rare Ornythion swallowtail emerge after four months! And the funny part is I had no idea it was an Ornythion...kept thinking it was a regular Giant Swallowtail!
Am still babysitting three chrysalides from October as well...so keep the chrysalis out of harm's way. Make sure no spiders, wasps etc. get to it.

Thanks Cat, Mom doesnt need anything else to babysit for but my daughter had alot of fun in Nov. watching them make chrysilis..then emerge as butterfly. Hopefully they come out in early spring...I dont want to forget about them, they cant get out without taking off the screen top. When the others emerged, we just put them on a flower outside..is that all I need to do? ( I hope)
Thanks
Chris
