My Friend Gave me Plantains!

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

My friend, who is really into herbs, gave me a 4" pot with 2 Buckhorn Plaintains! What a cool friend! She's a great gardener and they're already a pretty good size. So I'm just hoping these will be ready for Buckeyes this spring. Anybody ever grow these? If so, can they take light freezes? The native plaintains that grow around here are pretty small, but if I have these planted near some of the natives, maybe...who knows?

Good grief, Linda, how many dozens of those buckhorn plantains would you like to have? We have a huge population of them and have been spraying to kill them and the wide leaf ones off for years with only marginal success. I like the wide leaf one for a pot green mixed with others like poke, dandelion, spinach, etc. but my late husband HATED both kinds of plantains. Let me know in the spring if you want more.

Can I get on the Buckhorn Plantain bandwagon? We have native plantain which doesn't get very big at all...but it is used by buckeyes, white peacocks and can't remember what other butterflies. I only recently realized it grows wild in the back pasture so I will be looking for cats this year.

Leaflady...I'd like to try the larger Buckhorn Plantain if you're up to a trade or postage. D-mail me if you are.

Pics of these plantains? Are these the same plantain as the herb that is supposed to be good for healing?

I'd love some seed if you ever have some.

Oh, yes, that's one that's also used medicinally/herbally. My friend got some at a nursery last year. Somehow that surprises me. I don't recall ever seeing plantains at nurseries, but guess I never really asked about them at the nurseries, either. I just love the way the foliage looks. Haven't taken a picture of mine yet, but here's a link.

Of course, now I want more and am going to order seeds later this year, whether mine produces seeds or not. Because I LOVE those buckeyes! And Agalinis (which didn't come up last year because of the drought) only hosts them in the fall. The small plantain which grows around here in limited numbers is the Red-Seeded Plantain. But the butterflies might need something larger, I'm thinking. So we'll see how big this thing gets.

My gosh, I had no idea it looked like that! That was a surprise! Good luck with the Buckeyes! I sure love them too and will definitely try this plant if you have success.
