Pictures of my Newest additions...
Those are gorgeous - and named varieties at WalMart???!!! They just recently renovated ours and it's been such a mess that you couldn't find anything, so haven't been there in ages, but I'm heading there after work :-) Nice haul.
Sharon
I am just so excited about all of them...needless to say with this purchase my AV inventory doubled..LOL but it sure did cheer me up...I also got a couple of house plants, I got a variegated table fern, and a pony tail palm, slong with a cool fittonia....oh, and some mini roses for my girl friends for valentines day...LOL Here are the roses...all in all it was a fun day...
Thanks Sharon....I was tickled to find them as well, they had some minis, but no names on those, and they didn't look as healthy as the standards...so I passed on those...now if I can put some leaves down and get some to grow, I will be thrilled! Let me know if you find some too...

Janet, beauties all!!!
I don't have any African Violets, but I was at our Walmart 2 days ago, during our -20 windchill day. Burrrrr!
I went to the gardening area just to lighten my mood and I found a self-watering African Violet pot all by its self on clearance for 50cents. I thought this is a gift from God, or a good Omen. So I picked it up and am now on the prowl for a nice African Violet to put in it. :o)
Of course our Walmart does not have African Violets to go with the pot!

Well, my WalMart only had a few dried out AVs, but they were opening big boxes of live plants, so I'll run by tomorrow just to see. Seeing all your new beauties has me craving a couple of new ones, too :-)
Sharon
My Walmart has Beautiful things right now...calas, cannas, caladiums, lilies, liatris, clematis, day lilies, lily of the valley, glads, I just could believe they had so much stuff! It is really in good shape right now..nice roots on the lilies I got and beautiful tubers on a couple of the canna I had to have...I planted the liliy of the valley too very healthy, I hope to plant the clematis in the next couple of days as well...I wish they were larger, but I am going to use them on my trellis, so I will overplant with annuals this year too..and wait on them to take off in the next year or so...
Such pretties!
Okay, I think all of these babies have mites....YIKES....yes I think they came with these from Wally World...so be careful everyone....I am trying my hand at drowning them....I am submerging the entire plant in cold water for thirty minutes...I figure if it kills the plants, it won't matter, because if it doesn't kill the mites, them I am ditching them anyway....lol If it were warmer I would put them outside on the porch, and see if some other bug would eat the mites, and not the AV...but anyway, just wanted to share this sad deliema I am facing..lol Not to worry, though, Surely they CAN be drowned!
So sorry to hear about your dilemna, Janet. Are you really trying to drown them lol?
Quoted from article linked below -
"Cyclamen mites are REALLY difficult pests.
The best form of control of cyclamen mites is prevention. Buy plants from reputable dealers. Don't buy sick plants. Don't buy plants at places where you've detected other pests, or where some of the plants don't look too good. It's always a good idea to quarantine new plants, but keep in mind that these critters can take weeks or months to show up.
My major control measure, once I confirm an infestation, is to throw out infested plants. These mites have a limited host range, so many types of houseplants will never become infested. You don't have to discard your whole collection. Many of the types of plants that can become infested are easily replaced."

I want to add here that mites can be received on plants from 'reputable' violet vendors also. Ones which we all know and love. Bottom line is they can come from anywhere and anyone.

Oh, I'm sorry! You know I can sympathize, as I'm currently in the same situation with these dang mites. I know you are probably avoiding chemical treatments for health reasons, but if you decide you want to try using Avid, just drop me a Dmail and I'll send some to you.
BTW, Amaryllis bulbs get a mite that some people treat by putting them into *hot* water... might be worth looking up...

This says 44 degree water thirty minutes will kill them..so I am giving that a shot...don't know that the water temp is right though..how cold would you think 44 degree water would be...like just faucet cold....or should I add a few ice cubes? LOL
crittter, I don't even know what a mite looks like so I wouldn't know if I had them....can you show us a mite????
Also, where do you buy Avid? Is it just for African violets??
thanks,
gail
Janet - That article said 44C....that is about 110F
LOL that is soo funny SNOW...I didn't even notice that...now that I can do though...I do have a cnady thermometer that will register hot water...LOL Bless me Lord....I am just Blonde dumb sometimes! LOL
That sound about like the hot water treatment I've read about for amaryllis bulbs... try it on one plant first and see how it goes... the hot water treatment might be easier or more effective on leaves...
Bettygail, there's a good thread on mites in our AV sticky... http://www.steverd.com/violets/mites.htm
I got my 8 oz. bottle of Avid from BT Grower's Supply... it's expensive (about $100 plus shipping) but less so when you consider the dilution ratio of 4 oz to 100 gallons. That means that you can make a gallon of miticide from 1/4 tsp. of concentrate. Since 8 oz. is far more than I need, I've offered to split small amounts from my bottle (just Dmail me) with anybody who wants it, and I just got some little glass bottles that hold about a teaspoon...
