Home Depot Treasures

Silver Spring, MD

Hey Everyone. I was out and about and stopped by HD for the heck of it and guess what they have? The hugh everfloris selection in 6 inch pots AND they are only 7.99 AND they are named. I couldn't believe it. Large plants like the ones at Selective Gardener for 24.00. Just thought someone might be interested.

Thanks Nanna.I will hop on a plane an be right there.LOL Don't I wish!! Oh your Home Depot actually has them there? How I wish I were closer! That is an amazing price for those beauties. You are very lucky.Ours never carries anything named or anything nice for that matter : ( I am having major AV envy here!

Silver Spring, MD

Hey Nancy. I am so nieve. I thought that all HD carried the same things. I figured they must have ordered hundreds and that's why Optimara gave them such a deal. Didn't mean to cause an av ache.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

LOL Thats ok Nanna.I did call my daughter to have her stop and check our HD on her way home from work just incase because you never know... maybe ours has them too! I'm hoping anyway.Keeping my fingers crossed.

Lindenhurst, NY

Nanna thanks for the info. I'm in the same boat as Cedar. My hd carries nothing! I can't even get vermiculite or promix --- it has the worst garden dept. ever!!

Silver Spring, MD

I really am sorry. Usually plants at our HD have broken leaves and are all dried out. These however are perfect. The one I purchased (EverGrace) didn't even have a water mark or a packing scar on it.

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh Wow!! I pass HD on the way home, and will be stopping just on the off chance they have some.

Here is a picture of the EverGrace that I bought.

Nanna It Looks *Perfect*.Oh so beautiful and what a great price!

Lindenhurst, NY

Nana - is that one of the 'space' violets?

Abilene, TX

Nanna, that is great!! I love EverGrace!!!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

WOW, what a find!! Congrats!

Yes, Maureen, the "Ever*" series are Optimara's "space" hybrids.

St Joseph, IL(Zone 5b)

You can find the space age violets at Selectivegardner.com for $8 each as plugs. The plugs I ordered came large (not what I thought a plug would be like-->small), some ready to bloom and all needing to be repoted. I lost one to overwatering, I think, but the other 3 are beautiful. Leaves down already. I was not disappointed here at all. Happy shopping! :)

Nanna: Thanks! I am going to my local HD's first thing tomorrow! Oh, Please, Please, have these!

Silver Spring, MD

Sempervi, that is good to know. I have often thought of ordering the plugs but didn't know what I would get. 24.50 for a big plant is out of the question for me.

I certainly hope everyone can find the plants at their local HD.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Aren't yal in a deep freeze up there??? How'd ya get em home??

Debbie

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Now, I will have to drive all the way to Corpus christi, our closest Home Depot chasing down plants once again.....can't get to it until this weekend....that is a beauty and 6" pot at that!!!

(Zone 1)

We have 3 HD's in town .... I might have to check all 3! :)

Silver Spring, MD

baja: We are in a really deep freeze. 7 at night and a whopping 22 during the day. We might hit freezing by the end of the week but it will still be in the singles during the night.

I put the plant in 4 seperate plastic bags at the checkout. The plant was only in the cold a short time. Some of the blooms were a little wilted this morning but all in all it didn't get hurt by the cold.

(Zone 1)

Boo Hoo ... I went to HD and all they had in AV's was about 10 little ones, no name .... tag said grown in Canada!

............... I still HAD to buy one! ................ I took a photo, kinda dark, but here it is:

Hello African Violet lovers,
I'm hoping someone can help me. How/Where do you deadhead spent blooms on the African violet?
Do I wait for the whole cluster to die and then cut back at the base, or do I cut off each dead bloom as it meets the stem.
Sorry for the novice question, but before I started snipping I thought I'd better check with the experts!

Lin love your plant ! It's girl leaf. Looks like a couple girl leaf plants I grew that I loved !
Sassy Shell ! A vintage I sent many out. Love it!
Well Come snowhiterider !! As a flower bud gets old important to cut or pinch off, no need to wait for all to die.
It is important to keep African violets clean, well groomed and always take off old damage, foliage and flowers .
Happy Growing !!

Welcome Snowhiterider: You will Love this forum on African Violet's .... soooo many really nice folks with great knowledge!

After following this thread, I just had to stop by the local HD in the off chance they got some in. Nope, just the same old ones that have been on the shelves for the last month, half dead, mealy infested, pathetic looking things, still at full price..4.99...sigh

Silver Spring, MD

Hey Snow from NY.

I can let you know what I do for spent blooms. I don't take the entire stalk off I just pinch off the faded blooms one at a time. Once the entire stalk has died I go to the very end of the stalk where it connects to the neck and with a pair of tweezers or very gently with thumb and finger pinch the stalk off.

Hope you could understand the directions. Good luck. Let us know how it went.

Allison, what do you mean?

Quoting:
It's girl leaf.
How can you tell? Remember me from the fall bingo? Still asking questions.

Yikes, the sticky is down... did anyone bookmark the link to that good site showing all the different kinds of bloom and foliage?

Wait, I think maybe I found it... on the AVSA site... click "blossoms and foliage," the second topic on the column on the left of this FAQ page, http://www.avsa.org/Faq.asp

Here's my HD noid with girl foliage... I call her Rosie Girl! You can see the slightly cupped leaf shape with the light spot near the base and the scalloped edges, all typical of "girl" foliage.
