ponytail palm

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Okay so now that i'm comletetly tired of trying to find one of these for sale online ,can someone please point me in the right direction on possibly finding a variegated form of this plant?????

I know its not a hoya but the HUGE all green one that I have goes along very well witih my hoyas and I think a variegated one will go even better!!!!

I think this seller carries var. ponytail. I don't see that listing on the above link, but a phone call might not hurt.

Long Beach, CA

I got mine at California Cactus Gardens in Pasadena. However, I am not sure if they have them at the moment as I don't see them on their site. I have seen them in summer on Ebay a lot. This site seems to have some......

Good luck.

dm - send me an email.

That's funny. I'm preparing my house to list it for sale, and if you watch any of the programs on the subject, they stress that one must "declutter and depersonalize". So, since the hoyas are not a "disposable" option, I'm giving away each and every other plant that I have - with the exception of my Pony Tail Palm (happily sharing a window with a dozen hoyas) and Norfolk Island Pine.

Good luck finding one dmichael. They're in nearly every garden center up here in Canada - but I've never even heard of one that's variegated!

y'all have just got to stop. I have a nice ponytail, but not variegated.

Christine the green ones can also be purchased here in almost any store you go into. Even the grocery stores sell them. I never knew there was a veriegated form until I saw a picture of Marcy's plant. I've secretly been looking for one ever since!!!

My green one was purchased from Lowes a few years ago. It is growing in large black nursery pot and has at leas 6 bulbs in the pot. I'll try and get a pic of it and post here soon.

Dmichael ~ you may have already seen this thread. Good luck in your search... pod http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/687097/

So i've talked with a dealer who has a variegated ponytail for sale at the price of $69 for a one gallon plant. Only problem is they wont ship it right now unless I use next day air. The price for that is $85.97 plus the $69 for the plant would be a total of $154.97

. Now every now and again I may act stupid but trust me it's only an act!!! For $154 I can drive to California and hand pick the one I want!!!! Just cant see it happening!! I'd love to have one but I can honestly say I dont want it that bad!!!

this is my green one that i've had for about 4 years now. Sorry the pic is fuzzy and the plant was so big I couldnt get it all in the photo

I agree wholeheartedly with you dmichael. Eventually you'll get your variegated pony tail palm, it won't cost an exhorbitant sum, and we'll all get to see what it looks like!!

dm, I bought one off ebay last summer for 25.00. The grower is in FL. For the life of me I can't remember his name... sorry. Be patient.... As soon as mine get bigger and I can cut them...I will send you one...but you will have to wait a couple of years.

David, I will have to check for a var. one for you, they are all over around here too. But heck if your driving to California, stop by !!

Long Beach, CA

I will check for you too from my plantlady friend here. I also KNOW they will be back on Ebay in a month or so in abundance. That guy in Florida gets big shipments of them in & usually has them running all summer on there ...so just be patient. When they first hit the market...they were selling for over a hundred bucks for little "foot-high" ones with golf ball sized bulbs, but soon became much cheaper as more & more came into the country. I used to have an article on them....I'll see if I can find it. Stay tuned.

PS: One thing I love about pony tail palms of all sorts is that you treat them like cactus. Put them out in full sun, and only water when dry. They only one I ever lost was one I kept in too dark a place for too long.

Yes, dmichael....if *I* found one out here in 'Podunk' (as they say... LOL!!) ......you'll find one, too!

That's a sure sign that they're becoming more 'common', believe me.

I'll see if they get in another one in the near future, though I probably won't be going for a while.
It's been below zero every night for a week or so 'round here, and daytime highs are hovering around zero.....so no 'plant shopping' for me for a while!

I spoke on the phone with some guy in Florida about them who tried to convince me that he is the only one who can get these but I dont beleive that for a minute. He also told me that he couldnt believe that i couldnt find one at any of the big box stores around here because according to him these plants are everywhere.

The green ones are everywhere around here but i've never seen a variegated one and trust me anytime I go into a store that sells plants,I dont leave without checking them out first and I think I would have noticed a variegated ponytail palm had I seen one!!
