This winter we are fortunate to have 9 Tufted Ducks from Europe hanging out at a local city pond in Newfoundland...they are just a few thousand miles east of where they should be!
Bad hair day
Oh how PRECIOUS!!!! Thanks so much Todd! We really appreciate your posting these! BTW, great pics!
Todd,
They're so cute and adorable!!! Thanks for sharing!
Marilyn
Great shots, Todd.
Resin, your tufteds are too spoiled! Mine have to be tough to survive here! LOL!
Todd; They are such pretty ducks! Thanks for showing us.
Deb
The ones here have to put up with other white stuff being thrown at them all the time . . . they've solved that indignity by eating it . . .
Resin
Cute! Kids would call this the ponytail duck, lol.
How nice to see pix of birds I'd not seen or heard of before! Thanks!
oh awesome pics Todd. I have seen them in the zoo. They are beautiful
Have only seen them in photo's. Dapper little dudes! How lucky you are to have seen them in person. Thanks for the pic's.
Pretty birds!
Thanks for sharing the pics, Todd. How lucky you are to get to see them REAL!
Joyce
Never seen those before...very cute!
I just love ducks! Thanks for sharing.
I missed this thread somehow - what a fascinating bird!!!
Great photos, Todd & Resin!
Love when they wander "across the pond" like that, Todd. But I think you meant a few thousand miles west. :) I can just imagine them thinking they made a wrong turn, but oh well, this park will do. Last time I saw them was in Regents Park in London.
Their breeding range in Europe includes Iceland, and from there, it's almost as close to go southwest to Newfoundland, as it is to go southeast to Britain.
Resin
Resin, we assume ours do come from Iceland. In fact, we get a number of Icelandic birds here on a regular basis. There are 13 Eurasian Wigeons here now and they too probbaly came from Iceland.
The other possibility of course is that they're breeding in some remote area of Labrador, without anyone knowing about it . . . unlikely, but not impossible. Get searching next summer!!
Resin
That IS a possibility. I did see a male Eurasian Wigeon on the west coast of Newfoundland last June in the company of a female American...I expect hybrids to appear here any year now!
Hi Todd,
I've seen an American x Eurasian Wigeon hybrid over here, and heard of several others, too . . . it certainly happens . . .
