I didn't see any damage so I let him live, but if I can find him again, I may not! He was in my greenhouse.
Katydid on Plumie Flower
Thank God for no damage but he sure made a nice picture on that beautiful flower.
Thanks, Louise! I'll be watching for any damage, but I think he is harmless.
Clare that is not a Katydid..
I could be wrong and you have a cali katydid on the south beach diet but a katydid looks just like a grasshopper
but makes a different sound then the normal crikets..
They only come out at night to avoid being eatten..
:)
Did you see my post on Katydids??
You made a comment about my variegated plumies do you remember??
Anywhoo KILL HIM AT ONCE!!!!!

Hi Robert, thanks for the reminder and those links. You know, we do get the big grasshoppers here, and I do kill them when I see them because they can eat huge amounts, but this was just a teeny tiny guy, and I didn't see any damage. There is supposed to be about 2000 species of katydid so I hope that is what he is. He did look like a teeny grasshopper. Luc thought it looked like a borer beetle, but I think the body type is different. I sent a picture to Dr. Criley, but I haven't heard back yet.
Hmmm..
It's hard to tell from the pic and angle so i can only guess..
If it is a katydid it might be a baby one and not fully grown..
Katydid eat plumies at my house so when i hear them at night i go on the hunt..
In fact i been hearing them for that last 3 weeks now..
Dang, I knew I should of killed it. I'll see if I can find him later today. Dr. Criley forward my message to a very nice man, who is a specialist. He wrote this:
"Clare,
Received picture of immature insect on plumeria flower via Criley. Do you still have the bug ? If it had chewing type mouthparts (eg.beetles, cockroaches, crickets,) instead of a sucking type mouthparts (true bugs, eg. stinkbug, assassin bug) than you're probably right. It's probably a young cricket. Just out of curiosity... was this picture taken in Hawaii or elsewhere?"

Wow, great pics, Robert. That second guy looks so weird and sort of like a fly. I saw the cricket/whatever-he-is bug again in the greenhouse and tried to grab him, but he was too quick and got away. He did make the tiniest hole in one of my Nassau flowers, which you can see in the pic. Oh, well, I'll get him eventually.
I just sprayed them with Soy..
I love the stuff it works great just don't get it on any part of the inflo..
What you need is a reptile clare..
Go out and capture lizards and put them in your green house they will do the rest..
I have a kool relationship with mine..
I give them water (spring) while they are chilling on a leaf..
They will come right up to you and drink the water off the leaves..
When they are full i can then spray the leaves using my foilar spray so they won't get sick..
I don't use any harmful chems in my greenhouse because i am afraid i will kill them..
;=0
I would love to have more lizards at my place;-)
