ID help, please

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I would love any help on the ID of this Neoregelia...or a link to a site where I may be able to ID it. I find it very hard to buy anything at the local market with names..... This plant is VERY large...perhaps each leaf is about 2' long. I am told it has 'mexican-----' something in the species name. Help?

Thanks....and before you go...does this one have a name? It takes on this bright red in the sunlight....and then stays green in the shade....

Zone 11 is unfair!

No way to id the Neo. There are far too many hybrids. If you want to knock yourself out, goto fcbs.org - then Photo Index, Neoregelia, and look through the Cultivars. Also the conformation and color of Neos varies greatly with the sun exposure and temperature. If you put those two plants in very strong light you won't believe the change you will see in about 6 months.

lThanks all. The first one actually grows in the full sun and the second one half and half. They grow like gangbusters, too!!! I have a whole flat of seedlings from the big one...they have been growing in the shade and are more green than red...

Aren't they fun?
