Canadian Mail Order

(Zone 6a)

I'm looking for a Canadian mail order company that has a good selection of not so common plants. Most mail order companies seem to offer very similar plants, but the 2 I'm specifically looking for are: Musella lasiocarpa and Begonia grandis.
I also checked the Garden Watchdog but the companies listed that sell them are all US. Is there a good company anyone can recommend? I just don't really want all the hassle and extra cost of ordering from across the border.

Thanks,
Steven

Hi Steve,
If you look at the top of this forum, there is a link to the watchdog to Canadian companies..I have used it , you just have to look at them all to find your plants.
Good Luck

I also found this link on Google http://www.em.ca/garden/sources_perennials.html it has a list of some companies that aren't in the watchdog. If you go to the link click on Fraisers Thimble Farm and check out their Hepaticas! $$$$$ ka-ching $$$$$

Ray Mattei in Surrey BC sells the musa you are looking for. He has an online nursery. Edited to say that his nursery is called Tropic to Tropic.

Oh my doG Steve those Hepaticas are fabulous. We have a little local nursery that always carries some and I buy two every year - 1 pink and 1 blue please!. They also have gorgeous doubles which I covet - about $40.00 I think and this year I am going to blow the budget and buy 1!

This is one of my older ones - they take a few years to get to a decent size - I think this one is probably 4-5 years old.

Hello Fancy,

What is the botanical name of the lovely Hepatica in the picture?

Couldnt tell you at the moment - looks like there is a tag beside it but it is too darn cold to go out and look!

Brugcrazy, Thank-you! I will go there and check it out right away!

Carol, I really like that Hepatica :) Is it H. nobilis? I've got a few of them, they grow wild around here. Although mine are still tiny with about 3 leaves(last time I saw them).

I think you are right Steve - it is most likely H. nobilis - I have a number of different tags in my plant book but I have not kept track of where they are.

Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else find Canadian mail order companies hard to find on the internet?

No Steve, it's not just you. Sometimes, even when you actually know the name of the company you are looking for, a Google search will still fail to bring them up. I find this sooooooo frustrating!

Hi Steve,

I share your frustration!

If you haven't already, you could try these:

Canadian Gardening magazine has it's mail order catalogue listing online here: http://www.canadiangardening.ca/catalogues/

I Can Garden supplier database (not as good, but you might find something):
http://www.icangarden.com/catalogue.cfm

Sandy

Steve, Tropic to Tropic's website is Tropic.ca.

Thanks for the links everyone! I've been checking them out. It's just an idea, but I thought maybe we should start a list of the companies we know. That would cut down on alot of searching, cause some are in the watchdog and some aren't. What does everyone think?

I got this from one of the links Sandy posted http://www.rarexoticseeds.com/ It has a drool worthy selection of tropical seeds....

Your idea seems good to me, but it would also be a good idea to add our comments to the watchdog.
