Hi, I'm new at this...didn't know if I have to introduce myself first before jumping in with any remarks.
If I was........ sorry for jumping in 'grampapa'.
Well anyway I'm from South central NJ.. new home... been here only 2 years, I have lots of planting to do, the former owners didn't know squat about gardening. We have very acid soil so I'll probably need a lot of advice.

new to forum
Hi, jen. Glad you introduced yourself, but it's fine to jump right in, too. Not too many rules here. Always glad to see somebody new in the northeast :0) lots of nice folks here and quite a few newbies lately, too.
I'm jan, also go by 'gram' around here
Hi Jen,
Welcome! This is a wonderful group. I have learned so much since I joined in January - people are very helpful. :-)
Hey Jen - welcome. Plant stuff that likes acid soils - blueberries, rhodies for starters.
Oh - and just in case you didn't know - NE runs from England to Australia and ends about Wisconsin - at least today it does... LOL!
Welcome, Jen,
I have acid soil too. Some recommendations are: rhodos, azaleas, holly, camellia, hydrangea, dogwood, some ferns. Happy planting!
Loretta
Hi Jen .
I grew a lot of Rhubarbs
In a small area of very acid soil .
They turned out just fine.
You were probably refering to a Flower garden ?
Kell
Hi Jen - welcome!
Stop in anytime.

Hello Jen!!
Dave
Thanks for the warm welcome. I do flower gardening but eventually like to branch out to veggies and fruits.
I do love rhubarb and strawberry pie!
With our acid soil our town is actually the azalea capital of NJ. We have azalea and rhodies at the back of every garden but little of anthing else. We have almost an acre and the entire backyard is completely open with some pine, ornamental pear, arborvitae along the property line, basically a blank slate.....a landscapers dream...a lot of work ahead of me.
I
Have you thought about a Water Feature ?
Like maybe an ice skating rink? (It is sooo cold!)
Hi, Jen. Post and participate, that's how to get the most out of Dave's. It's more fun, too.
I and many others grow veggies and some fruit.
Spread some lime as soon as you can, it takes a long time for it to lower the acidity.
Andy P
Welcome Jen! I'm new to the forum too. Would love to have more acidity in our clay and alkaline soil. The folks here have lots of good advise.
Hi Jen. I'm new here too. Lots of nice fun people here.
to ginger749 I would like a water feature but my husband will not go for it. Maybe a pool.
Is that a pet of yours in the foreground?
Australians are not allowed to keep Roos as Pets .
We can with a licence be carers for sick or injured animals .
So No to your Question . They just roam FREE .
Just like your Deer .
Hi Jen - I must have had my head buried in catalogs not to have seen this thread - sorry! Welcome to NE Gardening. Hope you're not overheated in New Jersey!
Kell, You call that a small pond?! Mine is about 750 gallons. (10 ft by 6 at it's widest)
Dave, that's probably why you have no roos hanging about
Gram - you're wise and witty today, aren't you? :-)
Dave - Kell? Why did I feel Kell was out in California and big with Brugs, contributing over 1500 photos to the Plant Files? I'm too confused this morning I guess. Thread overload?
pirl
A little confusing I guess .
There is another Kell on DG as you state .
She has been here a long time .
I`ve only been on DG `s for 3 months .
My interests are wide and varied .
And I especially like annoying Dave with my Pond Pics . lol
Dave , I know you like the Pics. That`s why I include them .
OK - thanks for the explanation. Now I get that ginger = Kell. Well, for the NE forum!
Ginger 749, I have a question about the 'roos roaming wild and free, like deer do here. Are they as destructive as deer can be to gardens? Where I came from before moving to Cape Cod last year, in central coast California, the deer basically looked upon all yards as salad bars. I believe they especially relished mine. Fences had to be at LEAST 6-feet high and even then, they got jumped sometimes.
Interestingly, here on Cape Cod we live in the same sort of deer-area (coastal-type forest) but I haven't had trouble yet with deer snacking on my plants. Do others of you NE gardeners have deer problems?
--Emily
Emily - loving Cape Cod as I do and visiting every year, without fail - outercape - I think maybe it's because there are enough areas where they can roam free and eat what nature provides. Maybe.
ginger - are bush rats real rats?
Yes .
They are Native to Australia.
Where as the European Ratus is a real pest .
It will eat you out of house & home .

Check this out. It`s short & sweet .
You tempted me and I looked. Now I'll have nightmares!
Awwwwwwwwwwwwww what a sweet little rat.................... isnt he gorgeous!!
Emily, Deer are a huge problem in the Northeast. I've seen reports on Long Island that look even worse than here. Does that sound right Arlene? (Now trying to confuse Kell)
Hey Dave , "Emily, Arlene? Long confuse Island , Northeast . "
Whoa !!! The head is spinning now.
Are we spaeknig Engelish Heir My good Frend ?
You Win Dave , I`m confused . Kell
Dave's good at that! :) I can hear him giggling.....
I was going to ask the same question about the roo's. Do they spook quickly when humans approach or are they used to you?
Welcome Jen....
Welcome :)
Dave - a Southold friend has a pack of them, running through the garden, every morning and night. It was 55 at last count. As the land, here, is developed (into vineyards) the deer are displaced. No roo sightings yet.
Ginger - the original Kell has a birthday today but I see we have to wait until August 5th for you!
Surely you jest? Kell's birthday is being celebrated so happily on the Brugmansia and the Rose forums with threads and good wishes from her many friends and admirers.
I'm a Leo, too, ginger - the week before you.
That 'roo looks like he could trample a few plants. Big guy!
OK , then I`ll edit my comment .
Now I'm confused!
Emily = Cape Cod Gardener
Arlene = Pirl as
Kell = Ginger when Kell isn't Kell from California.
Quite the Kangaroo!
