Inexperienced Brug grower-NEED advice!

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Thanks ahead of time for any and all advice to this "virgin" grower.I started these two Brugs from seed last spring and they grew on my deck to about 4 to 5 feet with no "y-ing". Before frost,I cut the large stalk back several feet and put it in my cool basement, watering lightly about 1 a month. They immediately started growing a new stalk with leaves-one of them off the side and the other plant directly from the cut. They were supposed to go dormant!
What should I do? Cut the new growth off? Cut the original stalk back even further?I have 4 more months before these can safely go outside.I would really like to get flowers this year and I', afraid they will never "y".
Help!

Well it would help if you turned the plant the right way up LOL
anyway you will never get a Y if you keep cutting it back as that is where the Y grows, I would just water them, and keep them growing give a little Fertalizer to make them strong, looks like they will do fine in your basement until spring.

What-your not SUPPOSED to grow them horizantally?!
Thanks so much,Doris. At any time should I bring them upstairs and put them by a window? And what are the odds I will get any flowers this year?

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

If you have a good place upstairs, I definitely would bring them up and keep them growing, since they don't seem to want to go dormant. Get them upstairs and they'll start growing upright! ha

I have about 25 plants upstairs under lights and in front of widows. some have been forming buds, but dry up inside. All look good, hope for spring SOON!

OOPS, correction.......counted 72 plants.

Aha! BRUGMANSIA HORIZONUS - An old and venerable variety not seen for thousands of years. Did you discover it during an an archeological dig at Machu Pichu?

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Nope! stumbled across these while ambling about the Hidden Mountains of the Cyclades.

Oh ho! Another fine source for the prehistoric BRUGMANSIA HORIZONUS.

Truthfully, let 'em rip. If they get too tall and form their "Y", I would cut the plant about 12" below the "Y", root it in water and look forward to early blooms indoors.
Do you have any pollen on hand for pollinating?

if you have room upstairs by all means bring them up, by a window would be good, and if you give plenty of water and fertalizer you should definalely have blooms this summer

LOL You all!

This is why brugs are so amazing! They take a licking and keep on ticking. Amazing the survival instinct!

Next year when it comes to cutting them back if you have to............ for no room for your big pots........ I would cut it from low to the ground and root the entire top. That why it will not have to grow as much to Y as Doris was saying.

Hi Gloria. So good to see you back. I bet your summer is going to be full of brug blooms!

Willoughby, OH(Zone 5a)

Thanks all for the great info! Can't wait for summer!!!

Me too! Would even settle for an early spring.

Glad to be back Kell. Hoping to see lots of new "beauties"..

Oh an early spring would be so great. My yard is so frost bitten it is sad to wander about. I hope you are feeling even better and better these days.

Anyone know how much cold INCA QUEEN [sang ] will take ? It's in a 5 gallon pot , but I forgot to move to shelter - Should I move it now anyway ? I'm in 9A or B or ?

I lost my last Sang when we got down in the mid 20's. The other Sangs went to Brug heaven in the heat of summer. The only time it ever looked good for me was spring. I love them, but they don't love my climate.

Well,I just checked my outdoor thermometer....it is 9...yes you heard me-9 degrees. Spring is ten gazillion eons away.
