Well...after winning the E-Bay auction for these seeds... [ not real cheap ] Planting them...watering..and watching and watching... heating..setting the light timmer.. did I mention checking on them...here they are ..2 of 6 planted are up... but so far I guess it's the energy the seeds came with I can thank ... and the grower/seller... and I imagine I have the same ones to thank for them trying to be a large purple flowering Brug

I sure hope these are purple. Way to go Gordon!

If you try to get the cork off I can't watch. I have taken the entire head off more than 1 myself and that is it then for the seedling. Taps. It happend so fast, they just snap off. Maybe it will be humid enough that it will still push off both of them. Paul, do you always succeed? I will admit with practice I did get pretty good cutting it off.

Sanfrantastic Gordon! What a happy day it will be when you get to post the flowers!
Best of luck to you.

Myrtle Beach, SC

Gordon,
What did you start the seeds in? It looks like rock wool.
Mickey

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Paul ..Kell..
Oh...yes... I saw it as a problem... before getting back here to read...the posts ...after taking the picture this morning I'd left a big drop of water on it to try and soften it enough for the plant to do it's thing.. I did pry it off one of them though..
I just now sprayed with a softening coctail of a dilute superthrive..H2O2..seaweed...clonex rooting hormone and Iscraped it a bit on the surface to loosen it's grip..I found .. to do any mucking about with it on other plants..en find the first set of leaves deformed from the operation...
Micky.. yes it's rockwool.. a new sprouting favorite....dispite the full bloom of whatever the green is....
Also.. my Hawaiian DoubleWhite X L'Amour has it's first sprout now... and Ollie... the pod parent of MYseeds..was so proud her seeds were now in incubation..awaiting sprouting...she presented me with two flowers today.. see picture...
Thanks for the good wishes...from all.. here's hoping..

For those of you that havent seen the "Lilac 1" go to this site
http://www.kirchner-abel.de/site/home.htm
Hit the Online-shop, then Engelstrompeten, then hit Flava. If you click on the pictures you will get enlargments and if you do it twice you will get a picture of the plant. I dont know how accurate the colour in the picture is but I placed an order and payed for it today, so in a couple of weeks I will get it home and hopefully have flowers in the summer.

On Anne Kirchners site (this is her site) she stated that do not overwinter this brug with other brugs as its prone to get/develope virus. I dont know if its the same with its seedlings bet better be carefull then wise after catastrofy.
Janett

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What fun is that site, Jannett!! Just beautiful. I have heard that this lady is very nice too. She has so many great plants. I love the flava Wildfire too! WOW! I used to think Mobishu was hot but it looks like plain Jane there. Funny B. x flava 'Gelbes Engelsglöckchen' looks like a regular brug.

Look at this one too. B. vulcanicola Hybride 'Roter Vulkan.'
http://www.kirchner-abel.de/shop/shop.html

Interesting that she says not to keep them near other brugs because of viruses. I came to that same conclusion, if you have a lot of regular brugs , the sangs/vulcanocola/ X flava catch viruses too easily!

So PLEASE post pictures of your B. x flava 'Lilac 1' when it blooms for you. I would just love to see more of this one. You are a lucky lady! If I coud get one here I would start growing these again. Did you succumb and pick out any more from her candy store??

Mrs. Kirchner-Abel is the apex.

My little guys just popped up today! Three cheers for Volker!

Oh Liz, if we could only order from her too! LOL

Gordon, I am sorry, I didn't see your post. I went right to the end. I am so glad you had successful surgery. After seeig the link that Janett gave, we are counting on you to bring home the bacon! LOL

So why do you add the rooting hormone to your cocktail?
"softening coctail of a dilute superthrive..H2O2..seaweed...clonex rooting hormone"

for its antifungal effect?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Margo, sorry I missed your post too. I got up to early this morning and am going to go back to bed soon. Sooooooooooooooooo you are a lucky girl for sure. You can get one for much cheaper. Hey, you can get 2!!!! LOL

I have ones my husband made out of PVC but you can get the metal racks at Costco and I think even has them. I have seen them on here and people seem to like them! On mine my first shelf is very short for seeds and then each shelf under it gets taller to fit the plants as they grow. They keep getting moved down. But now I have so many other kinds of plants, on the shelves, the brugs have not much room allotted to them. I gow variegated clivias too and they are taking up more and more room.

The good thing is that your shop light fixtures have chains so you can lower them to just above your seeds and then raise them as your seedlings grow if you want to keep them on the same shelf.

Let us know what kind of rack you get. I bet others have some interesting ones put together too!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Happy Valentines Day, Margo. Kell is right, you can get several for $300. Mine came from Lowes for about $80 I think, I've had them for about 3 years. I even saw extra shelves there last week for $15. I got the 72" x 48" x 18" and it just fits a 4' shop light. I use cool flourescent tubes and a timer and it works great. You're gonna love it.

Gordon, great job on the special seeds. Please keep us updated with their progress. I would give the cork a little more time and see if it comes off by itself. I lost the head on a few of mine when I tried to rush it along.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Good looking seedlings, Gordon. I tried rockwook twice but the only thing it grew was mold. Lost my best seeds. Lol. Recently started a bunch of seeds without peeling them and now they are sticking up in the air with the cork still in place. After loosing a couple of heads, I switched from tweezers to small manicure scissors and so far great results. I hold the stem and cut the cork on each side and it just falls away.

Go Colts!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh what fun Janett! We all will need lots of pictures of your garden this summer for sure!

Linda your rack looks great. That is exactly the one I have seen and it gets rave reviews too. I didn't know you could add shelves, that makes it even better. I meant to put in my post that you can get them even at Walmart but the name would not no come to me and I meant to add it in at the end when I thought of it but of course by then I had forgotten I even was trying to remember it, LOL!! Oh to be me!!

Tussee I do it the same way, I got the tiniest of scissors to clip the sides and then slip it off. Seeing you post reminds me I never answered your email. I will do so right now.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Funny Kell, I have this memory thing too. If I don't write it down I'm in trouble.

That photo is from several years ago, plants this year are different and I have 2 racks (one on each side of the room) with a 2 x 4 between them and a shop lite on the 2x4 for my hoyas. I have shower liners behind everything so that I can spray away and not damage the walls and blinds. This photo was in October when I was just bringing things in.

Linda! What a lovely growing room you have!
My lab is something like yours.
I love it...a refuge.

I'm in my lab all day.

LOL Paul!

What a great room, Linda. I was thinking you had too much room in there but I see now you just started your winter migration. What does it look like now, 4 months of growing later!

How are the Seeds

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Didn't mean to intrude on Gordon's seeds, how are they Gordon?

Kell, it's filling up but there's still room.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

OH... threads have a life of their own.. as do my seeds... I did some operations over a day or two on the one reluctant to shed it's husk... and it's just as Kell said...all of a sudden... without any additional pressure .. the tops pop off... so I'm two sprouted... of those one killed.. [ althoug still standing and looking green... not a prayer of it resprouting a new leaf there Kell].. but I'mtrying everything I know do to do so.. a thrid one is about to pop... that's three [ - 1 ] for 6 in all of the Lilac1 X
got a few other types I mentioned going well also.. some MG and butterfly pea vines..went through to the top of the low cover.. and have maxed out the tall cover...got to pot them up
OH.. I too use a baker rack.. but to adjust tihe shelves it's most difficult they have them that adjust the flats shelf as well as adjust the light array with a screw knob..rather than hang the lights by chain.. I just saw alovely adjuster.. the lights hang by cable..with a reel of some sort.. just pull or push up and the lights move and stay put in the new position
well more later there... Gordon

Crumpler, WV

Gordon,

I am not Kell, but to answer your question of whether or not your head-less seedling has a prayer, yes it does have a chance. You will just have to, not bother it anymore and don't keep it too wet. Keep it warm, humid and under bright light. It may take a month, or two, or three, or it may not put out a leaf and go ahead and give up the ghost. You just never know.

I have been guilty of the same thing, trying to help a seedling escape the hull and end up doing more damage than help. Especially since this is a special cross, I would at least give it a chance. Sometimes they will put out a leaf, and go on to grow, although slowly.

One of the most important things to remember when starting brug seeds is, to keep the humidity level very high around them. This helps keep the seed hull softer than it would be in an environment with lower humidity. And when I have been so impatient and wanted to try to help the hull off, I try to get it as moist as possible and then use a brand new razor blade to barely slice the edge of the hull.

Here's to you having better luck with the rest of the seeds.

I have 3 growing now that were headless 2 have put out a nub of a leave. I don't give up till there brown and mushy!
Good luck!

YAAAAY there is still hope..I was thinking there might be... Thanks... Gordon

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

For that matter, I've grown seedlings that had either gotten broken off (my greyhound stepped on the pot) or had damped off. These were seedlings that were true seedlings - still had the cotyledons attached are were only inches tall! I just stuck the top portion back in the soil and it re-rooted!

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

they will re grow Grodon i have a love child x Harlot thay just made a new leaf after i poped the head off

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

After reading this and other posts about seed starting....

I'm thinking about starting some again
There are so many new crosses
thanks for push

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

I just had a seedling from Liz's seeds (gordo) that the seed coat was stuck on the stem, not the head, and I accidentally broke the seedling in half pulling the seed coat off. I just took the top portion and put a little rooting powder on it and stuck it back in the dirt, and it is still alive, that was about a month ago. It hasn't grown much, it is a Creamsicle x Tequila Sunrise cross, and the only seed that germinated of that cross, so I hope it hangs on.

Just leave them on - as the plant grows, nature will take over and it will pop off by it'self.
