this is a seedling(left) of a cross of Sahara wind X Peles Fountain (right) the flowers are about 8+ inches wide and for noe the petals curl back somewhat. I love the dark eye it inherited from daddy. The colors deepens during the day.
:-)
Like Father ..unlike son
Erick, those are amazing looking - just more to add to my want list! Thanks for showing us who don't have access to these lovelies!!!
Dang, I'll havta add Pele's Fountain to my wish list!
Kyle...your hibiscus have been beautiful this winter. Are they enjoying the cold we are having now? I'll bet those furnaces are having to run like crazy at night.
Brugie, during the day if its sunny out it gets like Brazil in there, at night it gets cooler but what a heating bill this year.SHEESH!
Kyle those are some beautiful flowers. Thanks for sharing with us all winter. It definitely cheers me up. I lost all mine this winter so I will be starting over this spring.

Sounds like tonight might be the end of the bitter cold. I sure hope so.
David, I hybridized the flower on the left from the plant on the right and a Sahara wind plant. The flowers are large and deep in color. At the time I did this one I only had a few cultivars, now I have about 100 kinds so the seeds coming up now will really be different..I hope!! LOL
Whats the one in your pic?
Kyle
Hey Kyle
This will be a new release for later this summer. The person who hybridized it is like you...not a professional nurseryperson... It's called GrandSlam and I really like the looks of it. Here's another from the same stable.
Congratulations on your new babies.
David
david I work for the city parks dept growing and displaying plants three times a year and do Holiday displays in our metro downtown area. and i like that last one.
Kyle
P.S. I worked retail nursery for 16 years before getting out of retail.
I just bookmarked your site, David.......still drooling....good luck
Oh Kyle, I love getting a sneak peek in your GH. It looks so huge and so full. Your new hibiscus is just gorgeous. You are such a lucky man.
Hey David, can I get your to save me a GrandSlam? Make sure you put my name on your best one before Lali and Zuzu see this thread. LOL PROMISE?? It is every man for himself. I just saw you on my birthday thread. I will see you in March but maybe sooner at your GH. You have to tell us when is the best time to come to see the flowers to help us pick. You have me all excited now seeing GrandSlam.
Oh how I love these hibiscus.
Kell, shame on you. And you call yourself a friend? LOL.
David, how nice to see you here. I need lots and lots of new plants this year, so I'll be seeing you at your GH as soon as there are blooms to see.
Hi Zuzu and all
I always hesitate in writing on this forum. Not sure it's ok for a commercial guy to add to these threads. Somebody tell me gently if that is the case. I will take the hint.
I will put one GrandSlam aside for you Kell. Zuzu, you are welcome anytime. We got off to an early start this year and had plenty of sun in January so the plants are looking good and budded up. I'm looking forward to March and the start of a new season. This year we'll have a bigger booth because they were tired of having the fire marshal over to talk to us. Lol!
Talk to you all soon.
David
Oh what fun, David. LOL. Are you bringing any trees? I want a couple of fat trees. LOL My yard is 75% dead after the big freeze, I need some big blooms to keep me from crying.
Zuzu, we must pick dates!!!
I'm ready whenever you are, Kell. I can't wait to see those lovely greenhouse plants again. The ones I got from David this year spent the winter in the solarium and look really good, whereas the hibiscus plants I bought elsewhere suffered even in the solarium. They lost all of their leaves and look like a collection of tipsy chopsticks. David's plants still have leaves and even some buds. They really are of superior quality.
BTW Kell and Zuzu, they have lots of hibiscus in FL too. :-)))))
My ATOT plants that I left outside are still beautiful. The ones I brought in look like those tipsy chopsticks. No solarium here. My windows are tinted and none of my indoor plants are happy :-((((
Now come on, really! Who has ever heard of Hibisicus in Florida! Lol! You ave to toughen 'em up by growing in near artic conditions. That's what makes a good hibiscus! : p
David (Tongue planted firmly in cheek)
Well, apparently that artic blast is on it's way. Tonight it is supposed to get down to 51, tomorrow the low is supposed to 24 with 60's during the day. What is with this crazy weather??????? If it does get down there I will be hauling all my hibiscus in. :-((((((
David, you know I love your plants but I fell in love with hibiscus in the Keys more than 30 years ago and I still think of FL when I think of them. Have you considered an East Coast branch (like in coastal SC) ????
Hi Alice
I am with you. I have been to the Keys a couple of times and it's great there. We don't have anything like that here. As far as an East Coast Branch I had better keep that under advisement for now. I live 15 minutes from the greenhouses now and it's all I can do to be there and make sure the babies are babied enough.
Take care, and cover them up!
David
Kell, Zuzu, I want to be in on this visit this time!!
That's great news, Sue. I'm looking forward to seeing you again. There's always room because Lali and Kell just stick me in the back seat and cover me with plants. Kell has a funny picture of our last trip there. You can barely see me amid the foliage.
Oh goodie! Well, I have the big car so we can really pack 'em in!
We better go when David has lots in bloom so we do not kill each other over them. LOL
