Quick question..just to be super sure

North Augusta, ON

hi,
ok...I have these seedlings, I know from advice from you all that I have to put them in bigger pots, but...do I start them in maybe a 6 inch and move up? or put them right into a 1 gallon? I got out the one gallon, but the poor things are so tiny next to those big pots that I hesitated and ran here to ask.
thanks,

Hey LeeAnne, seedlings have a tap root and will do better in the one-gallon containers. I pot mine right from a community pot to individual one-gallon containers. If you restrict the tap root, you will restrict growth. Normally, I am very cautious about overpotting, but seedlings are tougher than cuttings and need the room for root growth.

Thank you, I'll get them potted up this evening.

LeeAnne, you didn't say what conditions you have them in now, but I would not transplant this time of year. I would wait for warm weather. The shock of transplanting is so much less when there is warm weather and warm soil. Seedlings (or cuttings) could go downhill if allowed to be cold and wet this time of year. Unless you have them in a greenhouse on a heat mat with a soil temp of around 80F and an air temp of around 70F, I would wait until spring or summer to transplant.

Hi,
I have them upstairs in a warm (75-80) spare bedroom under grow lights. Do they mind no air circulation? I can't open a window but I have a little fan I could put there if I have to.
Thanks,
LeeAnne

A fan is always good - no air cicrulation is an invitation to whitefly etc.

I agree with Hetty about the fan. I would still wait until spring to transplant if they were mine.

Hi, I'm also going to have some Plumeria seedlings soon and when it comes time to transplant would half gallon containers work? The half gallon ones I have are probably about 6" across the top and around 10" or 12" inch deep....

Steven, those measurements sound more like one-gallon containers. I wouldn't use less deep than that, given the tap root.
