hostas

Brazoria, TX(Zone 9b)

Has anyone had luck growing hostas on the gulf coast? I'm thinking of ordering some but don't know if they will survive the heat.
Thanks....Susie

Thinking about this, you might also post this in the MidSouth Gardening forum or Florida or Georgia. I know those gals grow hosta and they might have some heat tolerant suggestions....

Susie, I didn't answer because I'm not quite on the coast. I love those little beauties and have several but they just don't grow or do well. They will bloom, but mine have never grown big like up north. You should at least try one and see how they do, they are beautiful in the shade garden.

I'm in Houston and have had a ton of them die. I've not found any that tolerate our high temps and humidity. I read in a local gardening column that "Hostas are hostile in Houston". That made me quit trying. I don't want anything that tempermental, but they are lovely.

Don't get me started about hostas, I will whine for 1 hour solid. You will do fine with h. plantaginea, but I would discourage you from planting fancy ones. can also grow Night before Christmas, Sum & Substance, Halcyon, Frances Williams in shady, moist areas. But in this location, the slugs will find your plants deeeelicious. See? I told you I would go on a whining tirade.

I'm in z9a,I think your odds are even lower in z9b.

LOL vossner, I could out wine you any day on Hostas.
When I heard about that virus that they are getting that has no cure, I was really sad and then I thought, It doesn't matter, they don't grow here anyway".
