Humidity...Finally!!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Our inside humidity has been about 16% if you can imagine. I can hardly keep up with the watering. Kevin (my DH) came home yesterday with a great ultrasonic humidifier! Totally quiet and spewing forth with a lovely cool fog.

Anyone have any advice about using a humidifier inside the house for av's and other houseplants? Sounds like we shouldn't let it get above 50% or we're asking for mold. Any other suggestions?

540 to 50 percent will be great ! A fan is good for circulation year round too.

I thought a fan is a no-no because I've read AVs should be out of all drafts.

They need air circulation. The fan doesn't blow directly on them but circulates the air around them. This is very necessary especially for the prevention of mildew and other bacteria.

Jackie, what is an ultrasonic humidifier?

Sounds like I need something like that! The poor plants dry out so fast.

Nanna hows your working?

Hmmm...looks like we should maybe place a fan somewhere. Nanna, do you have a humidifier in your house?

Debbie~I guess an ultrasonic humidifier refers to the way it makes the mist...through vibration or something. The mist is different than the kids' old cold steamer. The old one made a wet mist, like it was throwing water droplets. This one makes more like a cool fog. If you hold your hand in it, it doesn't come out wet.

I've been having a heck of a time with my sinuses, too, so I'm hoping it will help that as well. Maybe I can get some blooms going again; they seem to have all stalled and I think it has been the cold/dry air. Not exactly what a AV dreams of!!

I don't have a humidifier. We are OK in the warmer months. Just have problems when the heat is on. I try to convince everyone to shower with the bathroom door open and promise no one will peak. I have just starte using a mister about 3 times per day on my plants and that has really helped.

Some plants like the sinningia I have in containers during the winter. I also have large wells filled with gravel that I use for the plants that are wicked. The humidity in my house (with all the above) stays at about 30 to 35%. Not ideal but not too bad.
