I started a similar thread last year when we did the David Liddle order, and encouraged everyone to list three of their best performing Hoyas to give other folks an idea of what to order from David. Shall we do it again?
Mine are:
1- Hoya australis ssp. australis 'Brookfield'- David lists this as the best of his australis cultivars and I agree. The new growth is purple-bronze, the older leaves are a rich dark green. It grows like a weed, but has relatively short internodes for such a vigorous plant. It's covered in waves of pristine white flowers from October through January (for me in SF) that smell like cherries and ginger. Never seems to get any pests or diseases, either.
2- Hoya albiflora- I haven't seen the flowers yet (large, white, and perfumed), but the plant itself is beautiful. A rampant grower with giant, fuzzy green leaves with a fine shape. The stems are also large and fuzzy, a pleasure to pet. This one has outgrown every other Hoya I have. You have to admire it's determination. This plant will get very large though.
3-Hoya mindorensis- this plant has so many things going for it- fairly short internodes, plump succulent leaves, vigorous growth and a wide range of colors from all white to true red, magenta, dark smokey purple, and one with a reddish corona and orange mottlings on the white corolla. I already asked David about the last two, which you can see on the MSN site under "David Liddles" pictures, labeled Poring1 and Poring2, and he said that the two clones of mindorensis listed in the current catalog (after mindorensis ssp. superba) are these two clones. They don't have much of a smell, though, like none at all.
It occurs to me that last year everybody cheated and included at least four plants, so-
4- H. fraterna (pictured)- big shiney dark green leaves, good grower, easy bloomer, gorgeous flowers, but little scent (Ann S. says they smell of over-ripe peaches)
3 favorite Hoyas
My three favs and in no particular order are:::
1. H. subcalva IML 0229--I havent seen it bloom yet but it grows like a weed for me and i've got my fingers crossed that soon there will be blooms!!!
2. H. magnifica IML 0152--Another that I havent seen bloom yet but fut fell in love with the plant just for the leaves alone. The entire plant is covered with a very fine fuzz and is quite soft to the touch. This is another that I cant wait to see bloom.
3. H. lambii IML1046-- I really dont need to say anything about this one, just look at the picture!!!!!! It's been a pretty easy hoya to grow so far.
The picture does not belong to me and is not of my plant. It was taken by Michael Miyashiro. I purchased my lambii cuttings from D.L. back in april of last year and they have grown into a very nice healthy med/large sized plant already. No flowers yet but hopefully soon it will have.

I have been thinking about this question for a couple of days....it is SO hard to decide! I think I would have to say
1.H. lacunosa and her cousin H. obscura for their generous blooming and wonderful fragrance. I seem to have a collection of H. lacunosa with about 6 different clones...or maybe more. There are SO tolerant and so giving.
2.H. australis. I love this hoya for its' unabashed enthusiasm, rampant growth and generostiy of blooms...it is really a 4 wheel drive hoya!!
3.H. sp. Philippines IML 830 - beautiful leaves and gorgeous flowers. Also a steady and non fussy grower/bloomer.
4.? H. heuschkeliana...again...wonderful fragrance, growth is lush and no fuss.
I could go on and on....
I'm so new to Hoya's and don't have very many. But, of the one's I do have in my "Family" I guess I would list:
1. H. lacunosa and love it because of the fragrance!
2. H. carnosa 'krimson princess' - a favorite because it was given to me by an elderly friend back in the mid 70's
3. This one in the photo - got as a trade here on DG ... and I don't remember what the name is!
My (current) three favorites plus one (Mark said we could!!) are: (not in any order)
1. h. monetteae - the shear size of the leaves is amazing; who cares about flowers on this one! (ok, I do, but....)
2. h. callistophylla - I absolutely love this hoya - the leaves are very "dinosaur-era" looking
3. h. mitrata - got this from David Liddle on the last order - slow growing (for me) but the leaves are very cool - leaves look like turtle backs, with big splotches on them
4. h. pottsii (nicholsoniae) - the leaves are dark red and very cool!
As you can tell, I'm attracted to leaves.....
Karen
Susan - Yes, that's the mitrata - it is cool!!
