Common Red Shafted Flicker

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Hope you can bear with me - I have 15 photos I'd like to share . . . just couldn't eliminate very many!!! The first 4 are of a female at the suet feeder in my backyard. The rest are of a male doing some displaying - there were 3 or 4 fellas up there in the Alders, but I think the photos are all of just one. They were really moving around and going at each other at times - I was really excited to get these pictures!

What type of camera and lens are you using? Also I like your suet feeder, did you buy it?

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Birdscrazy, thank you!!

Bluegrassmom, I have a Sony - SLR A100, the lens is 75-300mm - I've been having a fabulous time with them (got the camera in October, the lens late December or early January). The suet feeder is a woodpecker feeder - not sure where I bought it, but might have been Wild Birds. It's hanging on a "fly through" feeder which is attached to the fence. I'm sure I've seen those feeders at the local garden center as well - the Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers love it, too.

My sister is into photograpy and I knew you had to have a super lens to get such great closeups! Thanks for sharing. My camera is just a standard HP. I have several flickers and other woodpeckers come to my feeder. I have been buying the peanut/suet blocks. I may ask her to bring her camera the next time she vists and see if we can get a few good shots.
I occasionally see the pileated woodpecker in the yard but never at the feeders.

Very nice series Murmur. When I was a small child, in MI we had a partly tame Yellow Shafted Flicker. She nested in a hollow old apple tree in the yard for several years. The hole in the tree was only 3 feet off the ground and large about 5" in diameter. We were able to pet her, while she was incubating and she seemed to like it.

Wow that must have been a great experience Gras!

so beautiful. I have only had one come to a feeder 1 time that I have ever seen. I hear them all the time though. Guess there is enough food for them here in the wild

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Beautiful pics! The male is gorgeous with the tail feathers spread like that. I'll have to look for one of those suet feeders, it looks like it would work well attached to one of our many fence post, at least I wouldn't have to worry about the raccoons carrying it off!

Lovely pics Murmur!!

Thank you all so much - it was sure a great experience!!

Gras, what a lovely memory of the Yellow Shafter Flicker!

And, Sadie, yes you should be okay as far as the raccoons running off with that particular feeder! I've had them, and itty bitty Douglas Squirrels, take off with the wire caged varieties if they can manage to disengage them from their hooks (which, of course, they often can!!!). One time I looked out and saw a Douglas Squirrel moving along the ground, dragging a full seed bell - I admired his perseverance so much that I just let him take it!!

LOL Murmur~ Sounds like a scene from 'Over the Hedge' ....
