Lookie what I found

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I was just upstairs watering and spraying and wondering why my hoyas wouldn't bloom. Lookie what was hiding in the back.

I lost the tag somehow. Which one is this? Here's a close up of the leaf.

and here's the whole plant.

Oh Linda, I don't know which one it is, but I LOVE it ... the flowers are going to be pretty when opened, and I love those variegated leaves! Hope someone comes on and ID's it real soon. I'm so curious ... I want one! Pink is my favorite color - wonder if it is scented? Keep us posted!

I'm thinking its H.Pubicalyx of some sort. The flower buds are identical to what mine looked like, and the leaf has all that lovely splashing. Of course, the surest way to tell is once the flowers open, post another picture. It shouldn't be too long!!

Linda,What a nice surprise for you.Pretty bloom and I love those leaves.

Thanks all, I'll post a photo when the flowers open. The leaves have different amounts of splashing, some have lots some have little. It's really a nice plant from a DG friend last year.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Wow very pretty. I cannot wait to see it bloom. I have only one from a box store but I can see how these would become addictive!!

Prescott, AZ

Oh what a nice surprise, it's def. a pubicalyx, but which one? When it opens you should be able to identify it.

San Diego, CA

Yep...they were right. It is easy to get addicted to these little darlin's. Gorgeous plant. Would love a cutting if you have any to spare for a new hoya addict...SASBE or trade for some other interesting things...

Anyway, what a lovely suprise you were blessed with.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Tami, I don't know enough to ID it. I'll post pictures and maybe someone can help me.

Shannon, I also don't know anything about taking cuttings. It is a rather large plant so maybe someone can give me information about that too. And yes, it was a lovely surprise. We're having an 'ice' day here today so I'm confined to playing inside.

Victoria BC, Canada(Zone 9a)

Linda your plants are gorgeous. The H. Compacta in the background looks very heathly and happy too. Has it bloomed for you yet? You must let us see the bloom opened and tell us how lovely the fragrance is.

Marieortz..... You can never stop at one:) before you know it you will have 5 and then... well one it goes you will be bitten too. Wish our box stores here on the island carried some of the hoyas but they don't.

Linda...do you grow your hoyas directly IN the coir baskets, or are they in a pot in the basket. Seems like it would be a GREAT/Exceptionally GREAT way to keep the humidity UP if the baskets were damp all the time.....

Macon, IL(Zone 5b)

Linda - beautiful plant! Karen

(Zone 1)

Can't wait to see a photo of those blooms when opened! And ... please tell us about the fragrance!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks all, Bea - compacta has not yet bloomed. This is my first bloom of any size, last summer I had 1 small one on a smaller plant.

Carol, yes the 2 largest ones are directly in the coir pot. Last summer I was able to keep the coir nice and moist without too much water in the soil. This winter inside, I don't have a way to keep them wet enough without making a big mess.

No sign of opening today, how long does it take?

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Very nice, Miz Linda! You are a good Hoya momma. :~)

Barb

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks Barb, do you remember the name of this one? I seem to have lost the tag. I'm enjoying them but haven't seen the blooms I would like to. Any suggestions to increase the blooms?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

A comfy chair (for you) and lots of time!!! LOL

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

You mean I've just got to sit and wait!! I'm a bit impatient.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

As the hoyas grow older, they tend to bloom more...because they are more rootbound? Also, if they aren't blooming/growing, it could be better to tweek the environment...watering schedule etc.

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

That one originally came from Logees about four years ago and was ID'd only as "Hoya carnosa". My guess would be H. pubicalyx also, but it never bloomed for me so you've done better than I did! Here's a pic of it a few months after I got it. I am amazed at how large they can become after only a few years.
Keep up the good work, my friend.

It's a fastgrower. If I don't keep an eye on it, it will vine and twine all around everything. I keep pulling the long vines down and wind it around itself. It's growing into a large loop hanging down. I usually water it (and all the others too) once a week and I've been using a weak fertilizer with every other watering. I also mist it 1 or 2 times a day with plain water. I have a circulating fan on a timer that runs several hours in the morning and again in the afternoon turning off at night.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

The H. pubicalyx group and the H. carnosa gang seem to like lower light and less water...lower temps.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks Carol. They're inside and the temp stays around 65. Would they be better in the gh where it warms up in the day and goes to about 40-45 at night? It's more humid out there.

(Zone 1)

Now that I look more closely at that photo Barb posted, it looks just like one I got in a trade here on DG. I am so new to Hoya's and it's really hard for me to tell looking at a photo, but am I right that mine below looks the same? I sure hope it's the same plant. I love it because of the leaves, and if it eventually gets pink flowers like that one above, I will be ecstatic! And, fragrance would be wonderful too!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Linda....you could try one out there! They don't mind the cool at all...but wait until it blooms.

Lin, hard to tell from your photo...but it looks more like a carnosa to me. But the flowers will tell.... Can the person who sent it to you tell you what it is?

Carol

(Zone 1)

I can't remember who I got it from, but will research back and ask the folks I've made trades with!

Thanks! Oh, see how new I am to Hoya's? I thought all Hoya's were Carnosa ( H. Carnosa lacunosa or H. Carnosa brevialata, etc). I am learning a lot as I go along here!

Since I've only had this one a couple of months, it may be a long time before it blooms ... but I look forward to it!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Linda...any blooms yet?

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Not yet, I'm at work today and didn't look before I left home but last night they were not yet open. (tapping foot)

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

ta da, it was open this morning!! This is my FIRST big bloom, I had 1 very small one on another plant last summer.
