Thanks to Blue_Eyes I now have my first Hoya Nummularoide. I was fascinated at first sight of their waxy, brilliant flowers.
This is my first Hoya and actually my first attempt at the baggie method! Two for one...
I have it placed on top of my Japanese hot pot for heat.
Will let you all know when it sprouts wings...Can't wait to go home tonight and see the transition.
My first Hoyabaggie method attempt
way to go Shannon!
I just started last year with cuttings and used the baggie method and it worked well for me. I didn't have as much water in there but the same method. I also put some into soil with the ziplock bag over the top of the plant and zipped up to the side of the pot. About 6 weeks later there was new growth and I slowly opened the bag for it to adjust to the air in the room. A few days later I removed the bag.
You won't stop at just one:) I think we all tried to but soon gave in to our Hoya addiction:)

It is so easy to get addicted to these plants, isn't it? Before joining DG in October, I had only one Hoya, given to me by an elderly friend back in 1976 or 1977. I had it ID'd on here as Krimson Princess. I just love that plant. Well .... since reading about them here on this forum, I have acquired a couple of cuttings of different kinds and I purchased 3 small rooted cuttings from Aloha Hoya's and I've bought a couple of hanging baskets at Wal-Mart & Home Depot! It is so easy to become a "collector"! I never even knew that a lot of them are very fragrant!
I agree with Bea ... you can't stop at just one! :)
Do they root easily in the zip lok bag of water? I've not tried that ... usually I root them in soil.
Lin
Bea and Lin...I'll send a photo tonight of how far the buds have come. I'm so excited to see if it works. Kind of like magic, don't you think?
plantlady........... yes they do root easily that way. Until I used the baggie over the pot I lost some cuttings because I couldn't keep the humidity up until they rooted but now I haven't lost any this way. Maybe I am just lucky but it sure works for me. They do grow roots at every node though which some don't like. I found that later on once they are out of the baggie the extra roots sort of dry up and stop growing so it isn't a problem for me at least.
Shannon..........yeah don't you just love it ! Please do send us another photo. In a couple years you will be posting photos of some of the blooms:)
Bea
Bea and Lin,
I promised a picture and so here it goes...It was the third day of baggie/wtaer method. If you pull the photo up close you can see the little nubbies starting...Is it time to plant in soil with a baggie over top? Any other suggestions? I kind of thought there would be more nubbies at this point but I was wrong...or am I doing something wrong?
Let me know your thoughts...
Shannon
Shannon: I sure hope some of the expert and experienced Hoya folks will answer your question. I have never rooted a Hoya in a baggie like that. I usually just put them in a pot of soil to root, or in a glass of water! But, I would think it's just fine to pot your new baby up now ... in a small pot I would think. Hopefully someone else will have some advice for you because I am real new to Hoya's!
Keep us posted on the baby.

I have a hoya Kerrii varigated limb I accidently broke off while repotting in a jar of water...nothing for at least two weeks but the small cutting I took and used hormone powder & submerged into coir/soil mix with a jar/greenhouse effect thing over the top of it has put out two leaves already...should I put the limb in a baggy??? am not familiar with this at all and this is the first I've seen it on this forum..what have I missed? from what I understand the varigated Kerrii is a very slow grower..I know the solid one I had in CA was not..it became huge...Deb
Hi shannon
thanks for sharing the photo. It does look like something is starting along the stem but how about at the cut end that you would put into soil or more specifically at the bottom node. I myself have not rooted a cutting just in the bag instead in soil with the bag ontop of it. (like a little greenhouse )I have kept them in a bag for a week while I was in transit heading back home from a trip, but then I put them in soil with the bag ontop as well. This is probably the blind leading the blind here but I would pot up those puppies and have the bag ontop of the pot.
Ok guys, gals where are you I know the pro's are out there:) What do you suggest?
Someone talked about this method before you might search for that thread.
Bea
This has certainly been educational for an H Newbie like me. Thank you so much for sharing this - great pictures. I'm going to try this myself today. Thanks Shannon
Everyone! Sorry for having been out of contact...I caught a terrible flu and was physically in bed for over 3 days...I can now get around a bit and am only now able to check my cuttings. I'm afraid to look!
Will let you know what's happened...

I tried this method with my broken off Keerii limb and I now have 5 roots on it along different parts of the limb...I had it sitting in water for at least a month or probably more....I put the baggie on top of the control box for my tv in my sewing room so it got some heat and I can't believe how it's just taken off....thank you all for the info...Shannon, hope your's have done as well......Deb
Deb, Cindy, Bea and Lin...
I'll be checking on mine tonight and let you all know...so it takes some time to root then? Maybe I just need to be more patient.
So excited that I recently bought a used (but new condition) baker's rack for my plants. I'll defnitely have a special place for Hoyas...
Anyone else have some rooting pics or some blooming plants to keep us beginners eager to work towards?
Please share....
well...after reading this thread, I just had to try it. I acquired a small branch of hoya bella that "fell" off a dying plant in wal mart, so I brought it home and put it in a baggie with some water. WOW...is he ever happy in there....which I never would have believed, he sure wasn't happy when we got home, after spending time in my coat pocket, in the freezing cold and being squished by the seat belt. He made an amazing recovery. Thank you for the method.
Yeah! Glad it worked for you!
Send a photo once he grows!
