I'm in the process of planning a full front-yard overhaul, and I wanted to get some leafy foliage plants in there to balance out the flowers. Are there any hostas that will do alright in a full sun situation, or are there other alternatives?
Thanks!
Illy
Hostas or other foliage for full sun?
artemesia are great foliage for full sun, they come in different sizes and shapes too.
There are several varietys that do ok in full sun. If they get at least some afternoon sun they would be happier though. Fragrant Bouquet and Paul's Glory are my two favorite sun tolerant hostas but there are lots of others that will work also.
Did you know that just at the north end of Salem there is a FABULOUS hosta gardens and nursery? They open the middle of April and you can wander through their gardens and see all the hostas full grown and pick out which ones will work best for you. Then if you want to buy one (or more) you can go to the nursery part and buy all you want.
I'm afraid I'm a hostaholic and I go out there almost every weekend. I only found it a couple of years ago and I'm so glad I did. They don't advertise much at all. Mostly word of mouth and they do have a very nice web site.
They also have iris's and daylillys. You might want to check it out.

Oh my! I knew there was a place down there and now I will certainly have to plan a trip down to Willamette to 'visit' my daughter . I think I'll go down there, say, at the end of April!! LOL!! Thanks for posting that link!
Frances Williams can take sun here as long as you give her enough water and a good soil with plenty of compost. Many of the 'corrugated' hostas can take sun up here given the right soil/water conditions. But if you are making any kind of xeriscape garden, hostas will not work.
I'm about to post a thread to this effect, but many of us are getting together outside of DG to place a large order for hostas (along with ferns, lilies, and a gazillion other plants). The woman running these coops is not allowed to run coops on DG because she is technically a vendor, but I have participated in her coops and she does a great job. I placed a very large order for many kinds of allium and I was extremely pleased with what I got. If you are interested in buying some hostas, or anything else, wholesale, dmail me your email address and I'll put you in touch with the website.
If you visit Sebright/Mid-America the 3rd week of May you will get the benefit of viewing hostas AND blooming irises. The landscaping around the house there is jaw-dropping to say the least-- many mature hostas as well as roses, lilies and other perennials. They also sell potted Japanese irises. Now I think I need to pay a visit myself this spring!
I just learned about Sebright Gardens a couple of weeks ago. I'm soooo excited and can't wait to see their hosta collection. I need to mark my calendar for May :-)
My front yard planter box area gets sun and my back yard is shade. I planted some hostas in the front (Maui Buttercups, Frances Williams, Blue Dimples, Midwest Magic). They did well, but I planted them late (Sept.), so this year I should see how they will do during the summer months. BUT....for the short time that they were out there they did rather well.
