Achoogardner - nice AV's I've won a number of AV's in the last week on eBay and most are waiting to ship because of the weather. One set of leaves were lost but no concern because the seller (who happens to be a DGer!) will send more once the weather is warmer.
I did get a large plant yesterday that I was very disappointed in. I rec'd Kermit - which is a gorgeous ruffled green AV. The seller shipped on 1/29 - I rec'd it on 1/31. The blossoms were all brown, the plant very pale and the soil bone dry. I suspect they boxed it up when I won it which was the 23rd. It came from FL with a heat pack but I swear there was nothing warm about that box. I've rec'd other plants w/ heat packs and they were still warm. I think the plant will survive, it was just disheartening to see that all those beautiful blooms were brown. I've emailed to let them know but have not heard anything yet.
So lesson learned for me: wait until wamer weather to get plants
The blooms probably got cooked from the heat pack. Just cut em off and more will grow. And, I could be wrong, but I think shipppers try to ship them as dry as possible cause the stems won't break as easy as when they've just been watered. Experts, is this right??

Gardengirl, which seller? I would be disappointed too! You want to get the healthiest plants possible. It is reassuring.
I don't understand ? They packaged your plant on the 23 td but did not ship it until the 29 th ? Sorry I'm missing something ?
Also heat packs should be used with large boxes and not touching the plant and insulation too. Also the plant should be packaged the night or morning before shipping.
Well, I don't know if they packed it on the 23rd or not - I was speculating. I won the auction on the 23rd and then didn't hear from them so I emailed them cause I had heard from everyone else that sipments would be delayed because of the cold - but not from them. he emailed me back and said they ahd delayed shipping and since it looked like the weather was going to be ok in my area, he would send it out. it went out on Monday and I got it on Wed, It was packed nice - in a priority "shoe box" w/ styrofoam lining. the plant was wrapped in newspaper.
I've emailed them about it but have not heard from them which bothers me because they were very helpful b4 I won and their feedback is 100%. I have not left feedback yet because I've been waiting to hear from them. It is "pjsviolets". I should jusy go ahead and leave positive feedback cause I think the plant will survive and I don't want them to replace it. I was just disappoint w/ the appearance.
Oh I doubt they packaged it until the day or day before. Heat packs are tricky. If it was just the flowers damaged you'll get new ones ! Many sellers take them off before shipping. Sometimes pictures are used over and over and auctions will state plant will be like in picture. Then it's hard to ship a plant and have blooms perfect when they get there.
Kermit is not in FC so I don't have info on it but pale foliage does concern me except it's supose to have light green ?
Yes plants are shipped dry if not you can get root rot and other problems. Best to water just a little at a time when you get your plants with warm water. Do not feed dry or stress plants.
Coming from Florida will have different growing conditions , I would wait a month to trans-plant into soil-less mix you use.
I trans-plant them when I get them in pot show salt/fertilizer build ups, green stuff, plant nexk hanging out of pot, roots in poor condition.
Please make sure to isolate all new plants and leaves !
Hope your plant will be Ok !
Thanks Allison!! I sent you a dmail....
Thanks for the Dmail !
Look at this nice sight I fount when searching for something this morning ! I think you may be interested :))

here is more info about link above if anyone is interested in checking it out !
Hello Allison. The web site is fairly new, being introduced just this past November. I just spent two days getting another 20 - 25 violets ready to post into the web site inventory. I hope to have them up and running by Monday.
There is no minimum order. We charge actual shipping, but there is a $10 "pull and packing" fee to cover materials and labor to get your order packed and couriered to the post office. Because of that, people tend not to order just one plant, they wait until they see more that they want. Credit card processing is through PayPal which takes every credit card known to man. You can also print off your order sheet and send us a personal check, money order, or cashier's check.
If you'd like to see our line of streps, you can go to www.streptocarpus-info.com and look for the Shenandoah series. Not all of our hybrids are ready to be put into our web site inventory, but they are pictured on the strep site. I have to add three new 2007 hybrids to her list.
If you are on the East Coast, we may be coming to a flower show near you. If you'd like to know if we're going to be in your area, let me know where you are and I'll check our show schedule for you.
It would be very kind of you to point us out to your friends on Dave's Garden. We are members of Dave's Garden but to be honest with you, by the time I'm finished doing all the work I must get done, I don't really want to spend any extra time on the computer.
If you'd like to get a feel for us, you can go to eBay and look for the records on seller orchidsmolly. My feedback is something we work hard to maintain and our business is over 64% repeat customers.
Thank you for your interest in us. We're looking forward to sending you plants.

I have bought AVs from Brennan's and they are GREAT! She packs them perfect and they arrive in wonderful shape. She's on eBay too. She also lives about 3 hrs from me. We're stayed in Mt Jackson before - sure wish we were going back so I could go by her place! Might have to make a road trip!
wOULDN'T BE GREAT IF YOU COULD GO THERE !
I ordered from "pjsviolets". I ordered on Sat and Got my box on Wed. My heat pack was still warm. I have not heard back from them yet, which concerns me. I won't leave feedback until I feel my issue is resolved.
I honestly think they packed my box after the auction was done and then forgot it. It would explain why the blooms were brown. If they mailed it on Monday and I got it on Wed, the heat pack should have been just alittle warm - it was ice cold and frozen. I emailed them on Wed and never got a response so today I just posted "Thanks" under feedback. Of course, feedback has now been left for me - "Great communication. A pleasure to do business with.Hope to see again."
This was the email I sent them:
I wanted to let you know I rec'd the Kermit plant today. The condition it arrived in was not that great. I'm not sure if the plant has been boxed up since the end of the auction or not but the soil was very dry, the plant a pale green and all of the blossoms brown. Hopefully, it will survive.
I didn't ask for a response but don't you think they should have responded?
You would think but people tend to get caught up in new things and forget about what they considered as done.
I feel bad now. pjviolets' husband called me yesterday. He apoligized for the mixup and explained that they had a tornado 3 miles from their house. He is sending out my plant on Monday. Gardengirl, hopefully you will get a response, too.
Actually, I checked my home email and there was an email from him. I didn't check there because they have always corresponded w/ me thry eBay messages. This is the response I rec'd:
Good Eveing,
Sorry the plant did not arrive in perfect condition which is how it left us.
The plant is packaged the day it goes into the mail system. I try to keep them on the damp side since they seem to travel better that way. The blossoms turning brown was probably the environment in the box with the heat pack. Most shippers take all blossoms off prior to shipping, but I have been pretty successful in leaving them on so people will see what the plant's blossoms really look. like. Some, green or white, blossoms tend to not travel well.
I expect the plant is looking good again now that it is out of the box and has been watered. Kermit is a good plant to grow and has a beautiful blossom that is really unique. Foliage is not that great for show, but blossoms make it worth growing for show. Judges know it is not a good foliage plant.
Enjoy the plant.

PJ's Violets
So basically, the AV is alive just no blooms :( But they will come....
Wonderful! The man was very nice when he called me. I hope your plant blooms very soon. Keep us posted.
They are all pretty....but I really like Rebels Splatter Kake, and Okie Easter Bunny. It just seem I keep finding more and more african vioelts I just have to buy.
Deb
I know what you mean. The Sweet Talker plant I saw on Ebay was more of a coral color.
