Anybody know where I can find instructions to make one of those strawberry planters out of the pvc pipe with all the holes down the side of it?

thanks.

Kath Ann, I have a friend that has one. They just took about a 4" round piece of pvc pipe about 5 " tall and just drilled holes a couple inches big all around it alternating.

You can make as tall as you want. Then fill with soil and stick plants in the holes. Make sure you got open drainage at bottom and have plants at least 6" up from the bottom of pipe.

thanks, sounds easy enough, guess i'd need a one in pvc pipe in the center to pour water in, put some hole in it for drainage, or else water would drain out the wholes at the top and bottom plants wouldn't get any water. I've seen them like that

You may find some helpful info on the strawberry jar thread.

I made a couple some time ago. You definitely want to put a 1 inch pipe with holes drilled all around for watering. It also for slower leaching into the soil and has less tendency to push the dirt out the holes. I took the quick way out and did not use the inner pipe and had a terrible time keep the dirt from washing out or getting it to the bottom, I also made mine according to the directions I had that call for pipes 3 ft long. If done again, I would make it only about half that length due to the weight of the pvc pipe for 4 in diameter pipe. Very heavy when filled.

Hmm. I have some leftover 6" drain pipe from my woodshop dust collection setup. Yall think that would work if I used some of the smaller PVC in the middle for irrigation? I have never grown strawberries, but after reading this thread I think this would be a good use for the leftover pipe.

Boy, I'm hoping to find some 5 in pipe, would be wonderful to find some 6 inch pipe. I haven't bought my pipe yet, but soon, better get on the ball too. Thanks for the link, I bookmarked it.

I bought my pipe at a big pipe company in town; I don't think the borgs had that size but they might now.

If you have concerns about sunlight's effects on PVC, here is a study that offers suggesttions:

WE just bought the 6 in pvc pipe l0 foot section was 20.00 and the caps for the bottoms were l3.00 a piece, no wonder their so high when you buy them already made. we didn't get the caps for the bottom, DH is going to cut a round piece of wood to put in the bottom,

Yeah, I won't buy the caps either; too many other ways of doing it on the cheap.

Piece of wood or plastic and some good old gorilla glue. :)
