I have just realized that I put 3 seed pods of vigna caracalla SOMEWHERE to cure and now I can't find them! If I ever DO find them, I'll post them to trade...
Have you ever 'lost' your seeds?
lol...I do that all the time...put something safe somewhere then can't remember where...lol
I'm far to annoyingly organised with my seed to do that. Every type i have is packaged in the same type of bag and labeled with there latin name and place in a case in the fridge in alphabetical order.
Every seed type is entered into my spreadsheet with the latin name, common name, source, number of spares for swaps, plant type, link to daves plant files and finally instructions on germination! And also when and if i have sown any this year. There must be about 500 listed now.
Does anyone think i should get out more? lol
Oh my Mike are you for hire lol?
Is this a gardener's way of confessing to a touch of madness? 'Loosing one's seeds', yes I think it starts happening somewhere past 50.
Oh, yes! Have you looked on top of your frige?
I would have to look in places they shouldn't be. How many times have I misplaced my pot holder only to find it in the refridgerator☻.
OK, how about when you have new seeds and you're not even sure they're viable because they froze and you certainly didn't know they were the popping and exploding sort, then find your chair's wheels rolling over them because they had landed clear across the room.....anybody done that? LOL
Gee Mike, you have really made my day!!!!!! Now I don't feel so bad. I do essentially what you do, but not nearly as detailed. Actually though, I must confess, I'm in the process of converting my table into a spreadsheet file so I can add more columns. I don't think there is hope for us. It can only get worse.
edited to add: I just finished counting my entries .. a modest 226.

OMG, yes! I'm AADD, so don't even talk to me about your organized seeds. I had a request for one kind of seeds on my list last year, but couldn't find them. I finally found them later when I cleaned out my desk drawer. I do try. I have my seeds in a box...well, most of them. It's distressing when I find seeds I put somewhere to dry and I no longer know what they are. If I were to be reincarnated, I'd want to come back as a very organized person.
Yes I have done that but think even worse is to not lable a seed because oh I will remember what it is until I get it dry and than have no idea what it is. I
Heheh, Even while my seeds are drying they are labelled if i don't know exactly what they are!
They are all kept in my utillity room as its warm in there so to small a space to get lost in.
I did loose a packet once when i put them accidently in an envelope to send to someone.. hey .. just meant they got extra seeds!
X.. is your list in excel?
I've lost a pack of seeds and can't find them any where lol They may be in a book, behind my computer table, in the fridge, lost in a cheese box of seed lol Who knows, I have looked everywhere! I need to look for something else then I will find them! Ever do that?
I have a spread sheet I enter mine on as I sow them, I make a list of them and put them in their categories before they are sown, I have so many seed this is the only way I can keep track of them by putting them in there categories so I can see what I have lol
X ~ I don't count my seed, it's too intimidating lol I don't want to know what I have until it's all done, of course I have to count how many jugs I need for WS and that's over 100 so far! Downstairs seeds don't get counted until they sprout because I'm afraid I will jinx myself and they won't come up lol Or I’m afraid to count them because I will run out of room as they grow on my shelves, I figure if I don’t count them I won’t run out of room hehehe
LOL... Many a time I have misplaced seed. One time put a bunch of seed pods in liek glass cookie jar with out the top and had forgot about them til I started hearign the sound of ping.. ping ping shooting all over the kitchen. had to duck til I figured out what it was.
Grabbed a walmart bag off counter the other day, thought it as empty and was gonna put under cupboard , when I picked it up it sent Oleander seeds floating through the house. Uggggg
Now, I crammer, got seed crammed all over and pots in the fridge chilling. Decided I was tired of spending hours looking through all the seed packets to find the one I wanted. I finally started to go through, put all the seed in the same type package, label and put in alphabetical order. Spent days doing it, sure looked pretty. I was so proud of myself.
Then I find, I grab a seed and unfortunatley it never gets put back in same place most of the time, so it temperarily lost all over again. So I about back to where I started. At least I tried. : )
The heck with the seeds, I want Mikey and X to come do my closets and kitchen cabinets.
blpender
Blpender, the rest of the house is a mess! lol
I like X's sheet though. I think i'm gonna add pictures to mine. Its really boring to look at.
The original idea was that over the years i would end up with a total plant book. i want to add heights hardiness and other info for growing.
X i know what you mean about importing into excel it changes all the spacings word wrap and other bits. I love excel but its a pain sometimes.
Mike
YAY! I found my seed pods! I knew they were in the garage and I knew they were up high.....and today I noticed a bit of green peeking out of a basket on top of a shelf! It's like they wanted to be found, cus I sure didn't see any green before! I put them on top of my fridge so if I forget again I'll come back to this thread so I can find them again :)
LOL... : ) Spoken like a true gardener Kimmers.
Yep, if I lose something I ask if anyone has seen it here and then I will find it or I will be looking for something else and find it lol
Glad you found your seeds!
Lea
I used to clean houses and the worst thing I ever found that someone misplaced was a packet of chicken necks. I was cleaning the kitchen and kept smelling this horrible odor, like something dead.
I finally found a very rotted baggie with chicken necks in it on top of the fridge.
The elderly MIL lived with them and she had cleaned the freezer it turned out. The whole family had sinus problems so I suppose they couldn't smell it. YUK! You could smell it when you opened the front door it was that bad.
At first I thought maybe it was some sort of ritual. LOL Not!
She was so embarrassed.
I have misplaced seeds and also had them stolen by rodents. I put some Maypops on the ground to ripen and later noticed that there were fewer than I began with, like six fewer!
Another time they got into a bucket that had four o clock seed drying and later I found them in the attic over the garage. Guess they didn't like the taste or the poison in it killed them.
I'm still missing all of my MG seeds that I pulled out to share with a dear non-gardening friend last year! (trying to get them hooked, lol) I had half a dozen different varieties, all labeled in their nice little packets. Oh, the horror! Those perfectly viable seeds are somewhere in this house hiding from me!
Like someone said above...I know someday I'll be looking for something else and I'll find them. I keep all my seeds in a glorified shoebox. The seeds are in plastic zip baggies, then put in envies and alphabetized. I also have an Excel spreadsheet that I just did recently that has info for germination and growing conditions. I've wanted to do that forever and finally bit the bullet this year and I'm soooo glad I did. Most of my seeds are from trades and don't come w/ germ info, and it takes a lot of time to look all of that up. I have 145 on my list and have some to add from recent trades...whenever I find the time.
Now before anyone "lumps" me in with Mike or X please let me tell you that this is about the only organized part of my life! LOL! One of these days I'm going to go on a rampage and have to find those MG seeds! Grrrr!
Wow X your excel sheet is amazing. LOL Ya wanna do mine now? : ) LOL
I think I need to learn how to excel better. It would be so nice to have all the info at your fingertips.
Thanks for postign the pic of yoru seed box Mike. I have mien just in a shoebox lid and they fall over and slide into the next alphabet. I had a friend whose house I was just at the other day that had this big container with compartmentized sectiosnin it and she offered it to me and I told her thanks but no because I couldn't think of what to do with it.
Now after seeing yours , I do and gonna ask her if it still available.
Maybe I will be able to get into the fridge then without havign seed packets fall out on the floor.
My daughter's oldest girl use to spend a lot of time here at my house before she was old enough to go to school. She would follow me around as I did yardwork. One day I was picking touch-me-not seeds and putting them in a brown paper bag. When I got done,I rolled down the top, hand the bag to her(she was 4 or 5 at the time)and told her to keep the bag closed because the seeds would jump out....just imagine the look on her face when the pods started popping open....LOL...Mean,ain't I?
P
Except during planting times I can usually find my seeds in two places--behind a chair in the living room in their box (it's an old apartment and there is a nice cool draft near the baseboards) or by the computer (shopping, searching or DGing). I've tried to organize in a sturdy file box set up alphabetically, sort of like a library card file with the packets as the cards but my shopping/trading/swaps/seed collecting got ahead of my filing:LOL: I did clean out the box last year (gave away collections of like all sunflower or all sweet peas) and then one shoebox completely packed with like 125 packets of seeds that weren't getting any younger. It's hard when you want it all:LOL: I work in a sporting goods dept and we just recieved our new spring selection of fishing tackle boxes and there is a new box that is about 2 inches deep with adjustable compartments and about 9x13" that I'm looking at to try this year.
I have a friend who loves doing computer stuff working on some kind of organization system for me so that will be fun, I think she said something about Excell, but I'm a fairly novice computer user so hopefully I don't muck it up=)
excel is great. You can do loads of stuff with it. I use it at work loads to make some complicated spreadsheets.
Mike
Spreadsheet here, too, and alphabetized file boxes. Seed inventory includes: name, type, gemination rate, maturity date, donor/vendor, and description. I also keep a running sheet in season to log the quanitities and weights of veggies, as well as a Tomatoes I've Grown sheet with counts/weights per season and a rating system.
The photo below is about 3/4 of my seeds. I have a shoebox full that still need to be posted, and a 4"x6" box with my winter squash and melon seeds. Oh, and 2 bowls with Rose of Sharon and Poppy seeds.
And, yes, I am still misplacing them all the time. I hate it when I see someone wanting something I'm pretty sure I have. Then I check my inventory sheet, and I do! Oh, boy! Then I go to the box...and they are not there. Dang! Did I trade them and forget to post them? Did I drop them on the floor and inadvertently stick them in a pocket? Did Hannibal find them and carry them off? Then, when I no longer want them, I'll find them in my make-up bag or some other bizarre place - sheesh! Who'd'a thunk it would come to this???
Wow you guys are really organized! I keep all my seed [ mostly veggies] in a big zip lock storage bag in the fridge ( except when I lose something!}
Speaking of which, I just got some Mini Chile Cabbage seeds from luvsgrtdanes in the mail yesterday. Anyone have any idea where they are??? The empty envelope is on my desk...
