Am I right in my identification?
Red-breasted Merganser?
I don't know but along with the ducks that water sure looks beautiful!!
Thanks, Pelle - the pics were taken in Seattle, in the area where I grew up. I took my mom there yesterday.
Yeah 2 Red-breasted Merganser females, the one on the right is older.
Very cool Murmur!
Thanks, Deb!! And is the first photo of a male?
BTW, what is the key to knowing which of the females is older?
I thought the one diving was a male also, but I am truly just guessing - this duck was new to me until I got these pics yesterday.
Yep, R-b Mergs; male in the first and third pics, females or immatures in the second pic.
Look out for the males displaying at this time of year, they have some really weird jerky postures, stretching their necks out, usually several together synchronously.

Weather permitting, I'll take my mom back there on Tuesday when I go into Seattle. This time I'll bring a great big blanket to wrap her up in so I won't be worried about her getting cold!!! I'd love to see the males displaying!
That would be cool to see!
Cool Murmur! Let us know ..
Deb
That would be cool to see!
Look out for them on the NJ coast, they winter there as well. They start pairing up on the wintering grounds long before they migrate north to breed; any time from now and for the next 2-3 months they should be displaying. Won't be so easy in Fort Worth, but they do winter on the TX coast as well.
Resin
Yeah Resin I was thinking that too. Only in the Gulf here in Texas.

Oh Thanks Resin! I'm not too far from the shore so maybe I'll take a day trip soon.
great shots Murmur
Thanks, Donna - I am so enjoying not only my camera and telephoto lens, but also this awesome forum and all the folks who frequent it!!
