White Flys on my Hibiscus

Tallahassee, FL(Zone 8b)

So I have white flys on my hibiscus(s) I had them early in the summer and I just cut them way back and that took care of it and now the flys are back and I cut them back some but I don't want to cut them back any more.

Can I use an insecticidal soap on them?

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Most definently, as long as they aren't in full sun - otherwise, use the soap after the sun goes down, let it set for an hour or so, then hose it off. Don't forget to treat the soil, too.

I use horticultural oil, diluted to 10 parts water to 1 part oil to kill the bugs on mine, PLUS - I water with a weak solution of Bayer's Tree and Shrub drench with nearly every watering.

I have had excellent results using a top dressing of worm castings to prevent white flies on both hardy and tropical hibiscus. I do not think it will help to get rid of existing fly populations but it might help to ward off future infestations. It is my understanding the plant takes up the "flavor" of the worm castings and it is unpalatable to the white flies but, who really knows..... Whatever, it works for me.

hmm sounds good i'll have to look for some worm castings, i've heard of them but never seen them for sale around here. do they smell bad? the pots are right on my patio when we spend a lot of time so i don't want it to smell like a farm. (at least for long...i could handle a week or so of the smell)
