I have many heirloom varieties. Do you like red, pink, white, black? Let me know, and send a SASBE and I will furnish you some.

defoecat, Can heirloom tomatoes be winter-sown? Thanks, Melba

Greensboro, AL

May I ask what is a SASBE?

Commerce, GA(Zone 8a)

SASBE=self-adressed, stamped, bubble envelope

Greensboro, AL

Next question where would one get a BE you see I live in a four red light town and if I went into our Wal-mart which is Dollar General and ask for a Bubble Envelope they would laugh me out of the store.

Commerce, GA(Zone 8a)

Wal-Mart has these in the stationary & packing supplies. Don't know about Dollar General

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

You might be able to use a regular small mailer 6x9 sized with some tissue paper tucked inside. Tomato seeds are pretty flat so I don't think crushing them would be as much of a concern as say Peas or Sunflowers. I just recieved seeds sent from Ireland in a flat mailer with no padding and since they were small flat seeds they made it here intact.

WW - They may be more receptive if you ask them for padded envelopes, since a BE is just one type of PE. Most people prefer BEs because they weigh less than most other PEs, which keeps down the cost of postage.

I keep recycling the ones I receive seed orders in. They're usually good for several mailings.

In your zone, they probably can be winter sown. Her in my zone 6, I start my seeds about the first of March in trays, and then when sprouted, under lights. Our frost free date is May 10th, and this puts my plants at just the right size to plant out. I do hundreds of seedlings a year, last year about 800. Of course I didn't raise all of them to production, given to neighbors and friends. We supply the whole community. DH and I did an experiment last year where he used hydroponics, and I used the soil, seeds, heat and lights. His germinated first, but mine were the better, sturdier, stronger stemmed plants. Mine produced first, but after a given amount of time, the differences in size evened out. We got good production from both.
