28 degrees this morning. Yeah yeah yeah, some of ya'll (see that southern kickin in?) had below zero, but remember I just spent 9 years in California!
Feed horses. Drag two 75 foot hoses out to girls pen to fill their tub with water. Hose #2 is frozen solid. Fill bucket from hose #1 and lug it last 200 feet about 10 times to fill tub.
Dump half of it down front of my jeans in process.
Now have frozen jeans.
Get girls out in pen. Latch/handle breaks on fence (electric rope fence) that makes the electrical connection. Now have no way to close them in. Call neighbor who helped install it and he's an hour away. Tie lead line across opening and quick prayer that they are more interested in hay than investigating opening.
Wind is whipping around wickedly making my eyes and nose water so now have frozen snot to go with frozen jeans.
Why did I move here?
Back in barn to let the boys out and notice that Thump's eye is swollen shut. Second time on same eye. Call vet out.
It's now just after 9 and been out for about 2 hours and just get started on stalls just in time for neighbor to show up to fix fence. Takes him about a half hour then another half hour to 40 mins to chit chat and I practice my southern hospitality as I'm thinking "tick tock" in my head. Thank him profusely and finally send him on his way.
Well after 10 and I'm supposed to be back in house and at my desk by 11 to start work and still wanted to run vacuum in house before work. Finish cleaning stalls and just get in house long enough to let dogs out and vet shows up. Thump got something in his eye, rubbed it, and scratched it. She called it an ulcer. Gave him a shot and ointment in his eye. Gave me stuff to give him and she asked to check on the girls (tick tock tick tock). Take her out to the girls pen and she oohs and ahhs over how improved Allie looks (she was underweight when we got her) and scratches her head over how big Lady is (which she always does) and tells me to be ready for her to foal early.
Vet leaves I get inside to work and realize I now have a half hour before I have to pick DD up from school.
Right before dinner, Ted, former owner, comes over with big ole round bale of orchard grass for the for the girls. Great! Except two days ago he brought over a big ole bale of fescue (at least that's what they told him the ball of weeds sitting in my barn is) and sometime this morning he brought over a round bale of orchard grass. I now have 3 round bales sitting in my barn in an area that we typically have a max of 20 square bales.
Then I go out a little bit ago to give Thump his bute (thanks Jenks for telling me what it's called) and Allie is laying completely flat in her stall making the most terrible noise. First thought is she's in labor. Second thought is she's colicking. I'm halfway thru dialing the vet when it dawns on me her eyes are closed. She was sleeping and snoring! Took her several mins to even realize I was there and the surprise on her face when she opened her eyes was priceless.
Thump hates bute. I hope it doesn't stain clothes.
another one of them days
