Bufflehead

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Darn - I just can't get a good photo of these guys . . . it looks like it will be fine, but when I crop it, it becomes too fuzzy. I need a 500mm lens - lol!!

Really a cute little duck.

I love these ducks, Murmur. We all need a 500mm lens, I need a camera that would take one first.

I've tried to get good images of them too, but don't have the 500mm lens. They don't let you get too close. ;-(

I want a 500mm lens so bad i can almost taste it - sigh . . . just can't justify the expense right now. Maybe later (or if I run into a really good deal!).

And, no, they sure don't let you get close - and they just don't come near enough to the shore.

A 500mm lens does make a difference. Keep in mind that there are some fairly inexpensive point and shoot cameras out there with 12X optical zoom and image stabilization. Buffleheads do keep there distance from shore.

Linth - those are fabulous!!!!!! I do have a good camera (Sony SLR with "Super Steady Shot") and a 300mm lens, but so far, no great success with the Buffleheads. I'll keep trying, though!!

Beautiful pic Linth!

fabulous shot. Yes they are very skittish. Even trying to get near them by boat

bigcityal,

The painting is of Hooded Mergansers, not Buffleheads .....

Had a funny surprise today. I live about a block from a lake that belongs to my community (man made "Honeymoon Lake") and decided it was about time I spent some time there looking at the 'local' ducks. Lo and behold - Buffleheads!!! When i first arrived, they were fairly close to the dock, but of course took off the minute they caught sight of me.

So this one is not a good picture, but was hilarious to see!

And this one was taken today also about three miles from the house - a little spot on the water to pull onto (belongs to a shipyard). I was happy to get this pic of Buffleheads and Barrow's Goldeneyes. There were Mallards and Gulls, too, all swimming and fishing happily together.

And this one I got the other day when I posted the first one on this thread (don't know why I missed posting it instead of that one) - not a closeup, but at least fairly clear. I was at the beach where I often get duck and lately eagle photos.
