remember me saying that cozumel smells peachy? well, i took a whiff of the open flowers and they smell like magnolia. to prove that i am not going crazy (some might say there is no such proof - LOL) i took a whiff of a flower that is just starting to open. it smells peachy, while the open flowers smell like magnolia.
anyone ever experience this?
dete
same flower, two fragrances
Very interesting, Dete. I have noticed a slight change in the fragrance of a flower in the past. I've also noticed a particular fragrance will differ in strength, depending upon the intensity of heat. Fragrance seems to intensify with heat, but I haven't decided what humidity does to scent -- whether it softens it or not. I'll have to pay more attention to this change.
these were side-by-side comparisons in the same conditions on the same plant and inflo. i have noticed what you are talking about, too. i posed the same question about humidity, because i could barely smell the fragrance from aztec gold. however, take it out of the gh and the fragrance is stronger. sometimes it was almost nonexistent in the gh where the r. humidity is over 75%.
You know, what caused me to wonder about the humidity was your experience with your Aztec Gold in your greenhouse because I had the same experience with Aztec Gold in my greenhouse last winter. Last winter, it bloomed for the first time in my greenhouse, and I barely smelled anything. A friend of mine offered to buy it from me so I sold it to her. I do have another Aztec Gold from a different source, and it has an inflo now in the greenhouse. It will be interesting to see whether there is a fragrance this time. Another interesting thing about Aztec Gold is that there may be more than one cultivar being called Aztec Gold in circulation. Many people have reported a weeping kind while others are tall-growing.
I have both of those in my yard clare as you may know..
They both smell the same "strong peach smell" however the smell gets stronger when she is producing 6+ more flowers on a single inflo..
Heat and Humidity and Light have the biggest affect on the smell because the smell comes from the sugar which comes from the leaves..
My AZ has a pungent smell and this is why i love it..
Twice in her lifetime she was crush down into a 1 foot stump by 2 hurricanes..
Last year (2006) i got 9 feet of new growth on here since Hurricane wilma..
What am i doing to her?
That plumie i fed on high very phosphorus diet so that may be the cause of the smell and growth..
Humidity is the biggest factor on any fragrant plant i have in my yard..
On hot humid nights is when most flowers throw off their strong scent to attract pollinators..

in arizona, plants throw out their strong scent on hot, dry nights.

lol that's about every night :)
Oh, good, Robert. I was hoping you would chime in. So, do you thing that the weeping kind and the tall-growing kind are actually the genetically same plant with a different growth pattern? I suppose growth pattern can vary due to conditions, climate, etc. It is very warm and humid in the greenhouse, and I do have a nice wafting in there happening. I just picked these blooms from the greenhouse plumies the day before yesterday.

Very nice clare that ring has a nice shape..
They have to be same plant clare their smells are exactly the same to me..
The only thing that might be different is the seeding..
My wide version so far has never seeded while my tree like az seeds lol or did seed..
I still have plants from my tree because i pruned her before wilma took her..
I could be crazy but the wide version seems to flower quickly from a cutting then the tree version..

That is very interesting, Robert. I'm glad that you still have plants from your tree and that you pruned her before Wilma took her. It would be so sad if she was lost for good, but she continues to live on:-)
