it seems that different stores in different parts of the country carry different bulbs. i am going later today to find out just exactly what our stores are carrying this year. i am not sure if the bulbs have arrived yet but if anyone else would like to swap let me know.
CLOSED: ALL HOME DEPOT, LOWE'S AND WALMART SHOPPERS LISTEN UP.......
Barb hi,
count me in- we have a trade going-lol
our stores haven't got them in yet-
but should be soon( Feb-march span)
i'm looking for these:EREMURUS,FRITILLARIA
which are you looking for?
plmk-
Sandy/muggsey/michigander
Hmmm..Florida, speak up, I know you've got the goods!
well we get fritillaria but i think usually in the fall down here. i am about to go to home depot to see what we have. they still didn't have them just a few days ago. but some folks in north carolina has bulbs now, right kwz7NC? hahaha
at our walmart we have phlox, asiatics, pink and orange tiger lilies, toad lilies, canna, brodiaea, tigridia, several different ferns, summer beauty calla lilies, lavender/purple no name calla, i think a no name yellow one. a few daylilies. and that's all i can remember.
Be careful with those WalMart bulbs and bagged perennials. I've been buying them from years and last year, they were awful. Of a bag of six cannas, one came up. Another bag of lilies and bag of dahlias, one came up. Other bag of lilies and cannas and helenium, I got not one single plant.
They obviously changed vendors last year and they were junk.
so, it wasn't just me! i had 3 out of 8 lilies come up and very few of anything else (can't remember each thing now)...i thought my brown thumb was showing through!
Our walmart has just put strawberries, onion sets, garlic, etc... out on the shelves, haven't checked lowes yet.
I never buy their iris or daylilies from these stores, their never what they are suppose to be LOL our walmart does sell the pineapple lily and the other one listed above. I try to get these every year LOL.
The Walmart here doesn't have anything out yet, but the Home Depot does.
Just off the top of my head, there were Black Magic EE's, Illustris EE's, all sorts of caladiums and cannas, TB Iris, Several named gladiolas, several named dahlias, tuberose, tigridia, ferns, bleeding hearts, liatris, brodiaea, pink calla rehmannii, yellow callas, and some mixed asiatic lilies. There was probably more, I just can't remember right now.
My experience, with Walmarts and the like are that they are not only mislabeled (the ones that aren't rotten or "mixed bag"), but soft and decaying. That's my experience especially with the lily bulbs. Simply put , "never again" will I waste my money, when there are so many great vendors with bulbs true to name out there. What does Walmart have on Brent and Becky's , for example? One thing, instant gratification, that is until you open the bag or it grows into something you weren't expecting. I know how tempting it is, I've been there, only to get "bit". Yeooooch! lol!
Best of Luck to you folks. Just my 2 cents and it sounds like I'm not alone on this one.
i know here when you wait too late in our heat to buy these that the plants are rotten. but when i buy i always open the bag and check for a live plant. and i exchange them before i leave the store. personally i have had good luck but i usually buy them right after they get to the store. i don't buy the iris or daylilies but i will gladly buy a bulb. they had hardy glads nanus at our home depot.......3 kinds so i had to have them.
has anyone found different varieties of crocosmia? all they had here was lucifer. or has anyone found different kinds of nerine?
I buy bulbs from the big box stores once in a while. I have learned to always buy them when they first arrive and never buy them when they are on clearance. The treatment they recieve, setting on racks in a heated store, baking in the sun etc will kill or hurt most of them. There are a few that can handle the bad treatment they recieve, like amaryllis, but most won't take bad treatment.
I use the same ideas when I order from catalogs. I always order within two-three weeks of getting their offers. When I place my order I always ask when they will be shipped and insist on the earliest shipping date. I live in a very warm climate and we have to start earlier than most folks.
I came home from Lowe's in Aransas Pass, Tx (on the coast) with 5 new tropicals, including a new red veined fittonia with long serrated leaves???? They also had Canna bulbs, (about 5 cultivars) daylily bareroots of all kinds and more perennial bareroots than I have ever seen them carry. Oh, the one i got most excited about was the crown of thorn plant. The bonsai collection was sooooooo tempting. By the way, the bulbs and barefoot perennials were all 4.00 each. Going back tomorrow!! These aren't old as I was there last week when they were just put out that day.
The plants were all outside under a cover but exposed to the weather...........looked great. The daily temps have been in the 50's and nights a little cooler

Any white cannas , bettygail?
I live in the mtns. of NC, quite cooler than the rest of the state. I will check out Lowe's this coming week. I got one of those little reminder recorders for Christmas and will verbally enter what I see and let you guys know if there is anything interesting or exciting.

Well, with no Walmart, Lowes, etc. within 140 miles, I can't play.
There is a Costco and Target 65 miles away.
I will look...we cant grow them down here. They are SO pretty. Our SAMS store seems to have all the bulbs that we cant grow. Never figured that...so its worth a look. Closest I get to that is a pineapple lily.
gardenglory,
thank you!
I know we have gotten lots of many different bulbs and plants at wally and H.D- usually there are Bleeding hearts, mckinna giants columbines, E.E's Cannas ,oriental lily, naturlizing lilies,
oh gosh i know theres more... i have always had great luck with everything- with the excepting of any of the speciality daisies. they are wood sticks your suppose to grow into plants-lol
and if anything there dosen't work for you...go to GW and find muggsey for a list.
or plmk what your looking for, ok?
I want the fox tails for selling roadside as cut flowers. they are so beautiful and last so lond in bouquets!
Thank you and plmk if your successful!
i am sending you a d-mail.
Thank you
Sandy
Folks,
I would be careful with WalMart bulbs.
I planted three Lucifer Canna; they came up, but were stunted, gnarly, and twisted. All of my other Cannas were fine.
I thik it's worth the extra money to buy bulbs from a reputable seller.
lol isn't it weird...I had just the opposite happen. Last year-all my cannas came up great from Home Depot, and a lot of the tubers ( cannas, etc) that I got from a reputable bulb co failed. Treated them all the same. Sometimes, I think its just the luck of the draw, but I do think that you have to be careful when buying them-I always try to squeeze them to see if they are still viable.
gardenglory..........look for crocosmia, nerine, hardy glads or other bulby things for me. don't need tritonia, brodiaea, tigridia or ixia unless they have the varieties separated into individual colors. or look for sandersonia. what color pineapple lily?
would anyone like hardy glads atom, elvira, or nymph? a bag of 10 for 3.48 plus tax.
we also had bowl of beauty peony here. why do they send peonies to this inferno? also several varieties of hosta.
blackberries, grapes, yellow trumpet vine.
michigander...........there is a lady in miss. who grows the eremerus and some fritillaria. she was very reasonable and sent me extras out the wazoo. GOTHIC GARDENS. HER NAME IS DENI. she's on ebay but i sent her an email on the ebay site and asked her to privately email me. she did and then we did business. i have tried with eremerus several times but they have not been very successful. when i go see her in june i am going to see if she can dig me a plant from her garden.
I WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST HAVE AT YOUR STORES! HOW ABOUT CALIFORNIA? somebody!
Hey barb...would love the nanus-hardy glads all 3, please.email me for what all i need to send you please-grand total. thanks!
I know deni- shes a favorite of mine...we've worked together in the past!
Great gal!
Sandy
I saw today at Lowe's & HD: Lots of dahlias, gladioli, some daylilies, asian lilies, pink nerine, caldmiums but nothing that unusual, yellow crocosimia, leucocyne (they did't look big, but I know these are usually small), broddeia, cannas.
garden glory, I am interested in agapanthus, bletilla, zephranthes, habranthus, gingers, different colocasias & other elephant ears, and white cannas, achimenes, crinium, weird lilies, & flowering vines. Lots of things that bloom in Florida, I like, but I don't know half of them.
For everyone who likes to shop at Lowes, I just discovered that all the tropicals I bought yesterday come from Hermann Engelmann Greenhouses, Inc. Although they don't sell on line, they do have a list of specific plants and cultivars they provide to Lowes. For example, I just looked at the name of what I bought,Euphorbia milii and on the marker it said "Cream supreme"............so when I go from now on to Lowes, I am going to look specifically for which cultivar it is and take my printed list from Hermann Englemann Greenhouses, Inc.........
kwz7NC, they had
pink rain lilies at lowes i think here. forget the package price. if you want those can we swap a bag of nerine for a bag of pink rain lilies?
Sounds good, mama, I'm headed over to Lowe's to pick up rocks for another project.
I was just wondering if Kmart ever carries bulbs. Last year I saw someone post that they had gotten some at Kmart and I was wondering about that. Anyone know? She had gotten some habranthus there. I'm also looking for that.....our walmart has pink rain lilies, dahlias, cannas, calla's etc. If someone is looking for something specific I can check it out, I'm going this weekend.
Oh yeah, we have callas, too, "Flame", "Regal", "Heather GLow" and "ALba".
Add arums (italicum especially) to my want list.
Altthough I do have my own feelings about buying from corporate sources versus supporting nurseries, my biggest problem with buying bagged bulbs from anywhere is mislabeled cannas. I've bought cannas from a reputable nursery in town and was dumb enough to try again. Both times got burnt and still not totally sure what they are, the guy said he was sorry and would replace (with the same mislabeled bulbs I didn't want), but that people didn't buy them much, so he wasn't concerned. At least with the big boxes I'm apprehensive from the start, I don't expect much in the customer service area, and I'm not as bothered if they don't work out.
Yes, some Kmarts sell bulbs, ours does. I've also seen bulbs at Rose's stores (don't know if these exist outside of NC), for very cheap, and I've had good success with them.
hunh......I wonder if I just missed the bulbs at our kmart last year. I'll have to keep checking. I was interested in what kind of habranthus they had.
Do your "homework" before buying bulbs and certain plants at these stores...I've found that they carry things that will not grow in my area...i.e. Peonies.....yet people get taken in by them figuring they must grow here just because the stores sell them.
Okay, I'll try again to get my point across. I've been buying bulbs from WalMart for years and never had a problem before. These were obviously from a different vendor. They were all bought very early long before the hot weather, they were not noticably mushy, soft or rotten although the bareroot plants were very small but about 80% of them never emerged at all.
I'm not saying don't buy WalMart bulbs after it gets hot or after they're on clearance, I'm saying don't buy them at all unless they've done something to address the obvious problems with the vendor from last year. (By the way, these were not all marked with the same label but all had equally dismal results.)
Magnolialover, bless your heart, some of us buy from Walmart rather than B&B because they're a lot cheaper and we don't have a big budget for flower bulbs.
gardenglory, you can grow daylilies, can't you? I'm going to be dividing some this year. tigerlily, I think Lowe's or Home Depot plants are better than Wally World's.
kwz7nc, weird lilies, lol.
hart, you have a point. Luckily, our Walmart buys from vendors close-by and they also provide different nurseries, so they are good ones.

kw7 i will go and get those pink rain lilies. asap. disregard the post i made on our private dmail as we need to renegotiate. lol.
HEY DALE...............that place is real pretty in the picture.
4PAWS.....................to be so far away from places like walmart, etc. is a blessing all in itself. i sure wish i had a little more isolation where i am.
and anybody that does buy these bulbs.............let's keep up with the success we have with them. BUT MOST IMPORTANT.........keep up with our receipts. lol. if a lot of people have bad luck and make returns they might get the message.
Kmart where I live doesn't have much of a garden center to speak of. They probably just don't buy many bulbs as they are too perishable.
I work at a WM and think they put their bulbs out in January and keep them too long. I've seen lily bulbs still in our Garden Center in July. The bag was just a bunch of dirt, the bulb had log since disintigrated. I usually have to tell the manager out there that it's time to chuck them. If all he had to worry about was the plants his job would be a breeze. Unfortunately he handles all the inside garden area as well, patio furniture, lawnmowers, lawn chairs, ourdoor bird supplies, all the chemicals, potting soil, the plant patio and the parking lot "corral" with the shrubs and trees in it. And at our store he is also saddled with the seasonal area which is all the merchandise sold for every holiday from Valentines all the way through Christmas.
I think to get the quantity and the prices from the suppliers, quality control/correct labeling/sorting goes right out the window. I've had the same thing happen at HD and Lowes except they seem to get rid of their bulbs faster when the planting season comes to an end.
Our Kmart has a pretty big garden center and a lot of Martha Stewart seeds and other items. Now I realize that Martha is not a seedswoman, but the one I bought came up fine.
I bought quite a few things at Walmart last week, but the only ones that were no good were the tritoma (they were mush). I brought them back and got a refund. Planted the others- some ferns, clematis, and lilies. I'll keep you posted how they do.
By the way, they are selling peonies and with our hot, humid, very wet spings and summers, peonies will not survive here. So do your homework before you shop. love, julie
i won't buy the peonies either but i have them growing here. they get beautiful foliage but i have never found a spot shady enough to get them to bloom. although down the road at my sister's house she has more shade and they do bloom for her nearly every year. however i would not buy peonies from walmart. i have done that in the past and they never have even come up.
and julie, i would be interested to know how your ferns do.
we don't even have a k-mart anymore and i have never seen bulbs at our big lot's.
