i was in miami's tropical fruit park today and had the pleasure of seeing and eating the Jaboticaba for the first time (it was delicious) -
the fruit look like large black concord grapes- and taste a little similar- the fruit grows directly on the trunk of the trees- really weird and cool!
i liked the fruit so much that i was planning on trying to buy one but someone posted online that they take 10-15 yrs to fruit-
anyone have a Jaboticaba or know how long they take to fruit
anyone have a Jaboticaba plant
Here's the CRFG Fruit Facts page on Jaboticaba.

I'm not certain that it would lend itself to pot culture in a greenhouse, which is where you'd have to have it, in less-than-tropical Brooklyn.
not much to say about it, but I LOVE the jaboticaba tree!
the word jaboticaba means "place where the tortoises gather"
have you ever heard the song about the tree?

from what I've heard, it needs VERY warm weather - very controlled greenhouse, and lots of light.
it is slow growing - often over 6 years to fruit
but some people have succeeded in growing it in a pot.
I've considered growing it, too... I will wait until I have my greenhouse running year-round though first.
Jaboticaba grows fine in a pot in my greenhouse.
stressbaby,
Interesting. Does it fruit for you?
No fruit yet, but I've only had it a year. I just potted it up today, in fact. I grow it in a CHC medium.
It is a nice little tree...good form, delicate foliage, and flaky attractive bark.
stress baby -
photo???
:-)
stressbaby- where did you get your Jab plant from?
Also do you think there are greenhouses in the NYC area where you can bring your plants to store them for the winter?
stress - any little "grapes" from the tree yet?
I'm going to be buying one from eat-it.com soon
gg, sorry for the delay in posting back!
I got my tree from Flora Exotica. He gets generally good reviews in GWD, but I have to wonder if many of those are Canadians who don't have to be concerned about shipping over the border. The plants I got were not packaged well at all. In retrospect I think the box might have been inspected at the border, I don't know.
No fruit yet. I don't know about renting out GH space in NY. I have seen people post this question and I cannot recall seeing an affirmative answer.
Post a picture of your tree when you get it. Good luck!
