California: ginger blooms unusually from Oct. - Jan.. Why?

Glendora, CA

This year, my Hawaiian White Ginger (started over 15 years ago) is blooming
Oct. - Jan., rather than the usual June - Aug. What is causing this? Has anyone else had this kind of odd occurence? Happy gardening.

Creativeplane1 - my gingers tend to bloom later in the season also. It could be due to the fact that by planting it in an area where it gets afternoon shade to protect it from the hot sun, this delays the bloom time from ginger plants that gets more hours of sunlight. My white ginger never really blooms that well - a few buds would open, but many more buds would be faded on the same bloom. I get blooms forming right up until frost. - I also cut the vegetative growth down in the winter. Perhaps they bloom earlier in areas where the vegetative growth survives all year and get a headstart on blooming. All theories - but you are not alone in your late bloom time. - Dianne
