She's amazing - she's had tip damage from below freezing temps in the greenhouse but she still bloomed. Much smaller than normal, and much lighter in color - but isn't it amazing that she decided to make an appearance at all?!
I had several plants that were about to bloom but the buds fell off during the worst of the weather.
My little day dreams
Freezing temps in your greenhouse?!? Yuck. Nice flower, though. Maybe if you kept big barrels of water next to the plants, you could store enough warmth in them to keep the ambient temp up.
Hi Buckthorne
We were ill prepared for the artic blast that we experienced. However, you only have to hit us over the head once. Since that incident we've added insulation to the greenhouse and actually have a heater on a timer. This is the first year I've had to use the words heater and brugmansia in the same sentence. If this ends up being an ongoing problem we're looking at passive heating like the wall of water rack.
Mary, that bloom is a good sign, and a welcome sight after all of the weather woes.
Congratulations Mary ! having a bloom in the greenhouse sure chase's the winter blues away for a little while doesn't it.
Poor little gal. I'm sorry you didn't get to experiece her beauty without weather damage. This spring, I'm sure she will really make you happy. Imagine what could have happened had you not had your greenhouse at all. I'm sure glad you did. Those that couldn't get shelter will more than likely come up from the roots as soon as you warm up good again. How is it out there now?
Congrats Mary! What a wonderful treat in this freezing weather! It is a beautiful bloom! I sure enjoyed looking at it!
It's been 26 degrees for the last 4 mornings here.. I'm so sick of this!
It's been in the 60's and 70's in the day time, but has gone to freezing every night. It's a quick change as soon as that sun goes down. We've got a heater in the greenhouse now on a timer but it's small and just barely keeping it over freezing temps.
Don'y ya just love the determination of some plants? Sure a pretty bloom.
My GH is cold now too. The heater is not too efficent when it gets to 22 most every night. It is interesting to find which are the toughest plants & which are the whimps. Actually, by rights they all should be whimps coming from a tropical cliamate. But some are tougher. I'll be glad when spring gets here! Think SPRING!
DayDreams has been a non-stop bloomer all fall/winter here in S. Fla. Just as the blooms fall off she will rest for a week and then set another bunch of buds. I have had more than my share of triples blooming on DayDreams this year!!
Even though she's small Mary she still has a beautiful bloom.
I sure miss that Brug scent in the winter.
I hope your nights warm up, Mary! We are doing great here again. Today was like spring. Just beautiful. I could actually feel spring in the air. So now I have the urge to trim everything back to live stuff and toss out lots. No way I will make it past the frost danger to clean up this mess. I sure hope no more frost for us!
Mary,
Love that bloom! Hope your weather straightens out soon.
