The one on the right is actually an immature (first-winter) drake - note the white cheek just starting to moult in

Yep; young males of all the mergansers don't get the full male plumage until they are about a year and a half old, but a few adult-type feathers start to come in during the first winter.

1/2 acre with all the rain we have had. In summer it almost dries up

yes pretty much. Still have some problems with it wanting to focus on the background. Maybe I should try using it on manual instead of auto lol
