brugmansia Bert

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I aquired this brug from Susie (callalily) several years ago. I grow it in a pot and it always spends it's springs and summers outside. Once construction of my big gh was complete the palnt got moved inside and has been there ever since.

It has bloomed all spring and summer long and now has a brand new flush open. It's been in almost continuous bloom since spring of 06".

The color seems to be much better growing it in the gh. When it was outside it always appeared to be very light cream colored. You'll see ffrom the pics that the color is a bit more orange when grown inside.

Sorry the pics are a bit fuzzy but I never claimed to be a pro photographer!!

Wow, I like that color, David.

Very nice David. The one you sent me was always a pale yellow when it bloomed, too. I love the way it takes on the orange color for you in the greenhouse. By the way, our fried chicken was very good and there would have been plenty for you. LOL!

Beautiful color! I like the shape too!! Does it have fragrance? I'm guessing it does.. Thank you for sharing your photos!

Bert originated here David. It is a nice one. Monika says it's an aurea multihybrid.

I contemplated getting rid of Bert last year because the color of the blooms when grown outside didnt impress me at all. Since moving it into the gh the blooms open up light but always darken up a bit. It also didnt grow much outside. For almost 2 years it just stayed about 3ft tall and kind of puny looking.

Once I got it into the gh I prunded it some and let it do it's thing. I ended up being a very nice plant in the end.

It has also been the only reliable bloomer that i've had this past blooming season. I had very sporadic blooming on all of my brugs this past season with the exception of Bert. it always came through!!

ZZ, Bert does have some fragrance but it's not often that i'm in the gh at night to enjoy it.

Liz,any idea who hybridized Bert? Seems like Susie told me once who the hybridizer was but I dont recall a name.

This was Bert way back in 2002. He was given to me as a cutting from a pelargonium hybridizer here. He knew nothing of it's hybridizer.

LOL, I look back at that thread and I see what a big learning curve I made.
That was in the Glory days in more ways than one. Brugs were brand new in NA and there was nothing on the internet about them for us to learn. Then Monika gave us direction.
Also, Gloria Lessner was with us. She will stay with a lot of us for a long time.

What a beautiful plant. How hot does your green house get in the summer?

I have a small Bert that didn't bloom last summer. It's in the gh waiting for spring.

Liz, it was fun reading the old thread. What happened with Ernie?

Mickey, my tropicals house which is the one that the brugs are in probably gets up to between 90 and 100 during the summer months and the humidity stays anywhere from 85 to 100+ %

All 3 of my gh's are in the open with no natural shade. I have to cover them with shade cloth and I keep funs running continuously.

The sides also roll up on the big house and that provides a lot of air circulation .
