Need help, newbie on computer forum, can't email photos

Hello, Within the last few months I am no longer able to send photos via email. I have a hotmail account and whenever I try I receive an error message that says:

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'Hotmail', Server:
"HTTP://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail.asp,"
Protocol.:TTTPMail,Port:O,
Secure (SSL): NO, Socket error:12019
Error # : 0X800004005

This has happened to me over and over again and I am at a loss as to what to do.
Previously I was able to send pictures with no problem. I am able to post pictures on Dave's garden so it seems to be related to email. Also, could it have anything to do with the McAfee virus protection I have? My computer went into some strange parallel universe back in October and I think it was something to do with that. Any help, ideas or input for a computer dummy would be most welcome. Thanks.
