Hello!
I am looking for seeds for some plants that would be good for attracting butterflies and hummers in my Texas garden this year. I already am growing some milkweed, pentas, and salvia coccinea. Also some passion vines. Does anyone have suggestions or some seeds they could share? I have a few seeds I could offer or perhaps I could SASE.
Thanks, Kim
looking for butterfly/hummingbird seeds
Lantana you know about and is available locally, but, how about porterweed? (Stachytarpheta speciosa)? I have a blue that they feast at everyday and seeds should be ready in about 4-6 weeks. They love verbena also.
Also Cassia, yellow, is a host plant for larvae. Parsley is a host plant too.
One book I have says begonia, but, I have not seen them go there in my yard.
Xerantheum....I would love some of your cypress vine. Will it take full sun? I've got lots of fence for vines that like part-full sun.
dale....I have a big lantana in the front of my house, and the butterflies visited it all last summer. However, it is a wild one and is in a bad spot. I wonder if I can move it? I've never heard of porterweed but I'd love to try some.
Thanks everyone!
Kim
The cypress vine loves full sun. Just send a SASE to me with 52 cents postage on it. My address is in the addy. Please include a note with your screen name and what I am suppose to be sending you. If you need to send me a d-mail, please put Cypress Vine as the title. I'm involved in so many trades that it's difficult to keep them all straight.
Thanks!!

Liatris is a butterfly magnet - & the flower stalks last a long time. A Cat mint in the back of my flower garden is covered with bees, butterflies & other insects. Finches eat the Cat mint seeds when they mature. Sedums are also great for attracting butterflies. For hummingbirds, I find a "dark eyes" Fuschia works well, & red Cannas will keep the hummers around all day long.
I have Liatris seeds, & I can offer Cat mint, Canna & Sedum plants in the Spring.

Thanks so much for all that info Julie! I am truly a beginner in all this. I have orange cannas that seem to pop up everywhere, maybe I should mix some red ones in with them then. I don't recall seeing much on the orange ones, but then they were on the side of the house so maybe I just didn't see them. I would love to trade with you....please let me know what you might be looking for. I just sowed a bunch of seeds today and potted up some hibiscus seedlings.
Thanks, Kim
I had tall red Cannas in the back of my flower garden last season, & the hummingbirds stayed there all day. So nice to watch them buzz around! Another plant that they love is Bee Balm. I have plenty of them too, but they can become invasive.
We won't be gardening for another couple of months here in cold New England... I always have lots of extra plants & I will gladly share them with you. But, I can only dream this time of the year :)
Keep in touch!
Julie
No problem Julie....I'm originally from Ohio so I know all too well that now is the time of year you can only dream of gardening. Of course, on the flip side, here we have to put everything on hold and hide in our AC for 3 months in the summer....lol. Thanks for your generous offer and I will keep in touch.

Four o'clocks (Mirabilis multiflora) and butterfly bush (buddleia)hold first place for hummers and butterflies in my yard! Be aware that 4 o'clocks are INVASIVE to the max!
Hmmm...I planted some 4 oclock seeds yesterday but they were pretty old so I don't know if they will come up. Thanks for the heads up on invasiveness, I will need to find a good spot just for them. Will they take part shade?
Kim
Kim send me a SASBE with a note and I will be happy to send to some seed. I have several kinds as I am a butterfly gardener
Thank you so much DonnaB! Will do!
Thanks, Kim
Kim,
You have Dmail!

Hey BlueEyes,
You might want to take a run over to the Butterfly/Hummingbord forum. ... you won't believe it, but all the folks on there are from Texas and Florida. Okay, maybe not all, but a LOT of the people on there are for Texas and Florida. LOL! I bet if you say "Hey, ya'll" they'll get you all set up. :)) They talk about flowers I've never heard of, but I bet you can grow them there.
Suzy
Ooops! Never mind -- YOU are one of the (many) people from Texas posting there! LOL!
