house finch picture?

Gainesville, FL(Zone 9a)

I have had a new visitor the past few days..a med.small brownish bird with alot of red on it. Bird store suggested house finch. Cant find a picture. If someone has a real picture of a house finch, would you mind posting it. Its not a skiddish bird at all. You can get a good look...just havent ever seen one. Could only get one VERY bad picture..sun was going down and facing camera. thanks

Your welcome garden! I have so many here I sometimes feel like a breeder. I was so glad to see pretty large numbers of Junco's show up in the Fall just to have something different. Heres a male with a female HF.

yes, i have seen her too, I need to get my thistle...and fast. The earliest I have had any thistle eating birds is valentines day...and that is even considered very early for the yellow finches. I have already seen a few this past week. We dont have junco's..or that ive seen.

House Finch are considered exotics in Fla. or at least last time I heard.

They're downright common out here in the PNW, but I sure enjoy them!

I think thats a Purple Finch; isn't it?

Pell, I don't think we get Purple Finches out here, but I wouldn't swear to it. As far as I know, we only get the House Finch.

I just re-checked one of my books - the Purple is around, but mostly in the forests. However, the one I showed is pretty stocky, isn't he? Definitely looks more like a Purple Finch. I'll try to keep an eye out for him!

Murmur, the only reason I ask is because yours in the pic has the red all over which none of mine do; plus aren't the beaks different?

They are exotic I believe in florida. Ive been bird watching pretty good in my yard for a good 9 years...never saw one. Odd day today, hardly any birds at a usually busy feeder. Not to sound silly...but we first saw the bird head on....I thought it was a baby woodpecker...only thing i could think of with that red head. It soon turned to the side and we saw the brown of a mature bird...looked like two different birds in one.

Pelle, I think you very well might be right - and that's pretty exciting to me!!!

I just read there are 2 subspecies of them. The Pacific form and a more widespread one. Pretty interesting.

Garden, you should have some goldfinch down there too. Maybe when you put out the thistle you'll see more.
The house finch love safflower too.
