Home-built greenhouse

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Here is my home built greenhouse, 10' X 22' attached to the house. Husband built it out of storm windows & cement blocks. 29 degrees outside today, 75 in the greenhouse. We heat with a ventless propane heater and we keep 2-100'lb tanks of propane outside. When one empties, we hook up the other & go get propane. This pix was taken about 8 years ago when we used to have them deliver propane to the house. This greenhouse has fiberglass for the roof.

Thanks for posting, it came at a great time. I'm taking a greenhouse course in junior college, and I'm supposed to describe how glass or plastic or flexible plastic is installed. Seeing yours gives me great hope that someday we can do this too! My husband is a brick-layer so it is only a matter of time, LOL.

Nice, buttoneer. What do you grow? Maybe you could post some pics of the inside...?

Buttoneer ~ as you are heating with ventless propane I assume you have no problems with the plants? Is ventless different from unvented? When we had open space heaters for the house, the house plants protested. pod

Podster, ventless = vent-free = unvented.

(If venting = supplying fresh air, every heater is vented. It is just a matter of how that air gets to the heater.)

Well, when you build a home-built greenhouse, it is "never" completely sealed, even though we staple plastic to the outside over the windows and inside, so the gas gets out. The plants are just fine. I haven't lost any. Let's see if I have any pix inside. Here's another view outside (taken years earlier)

Here's an inside view of some seedlings I was propagating last year. I'll try to take some pix inside today & post them later. These seedlings are on an elevated growing area we built to keep slugs from them. We also stapled copper strips around it to keep the slugs off. I have a terrible slug problem. I'm out there nightly squirting them with 70% alcohol. I have tried slug pellets but I am not satisfied with the results & it gets messy when they get water saturated.

Here is an African Lily I bloomed for the first time and my little rat terrier Fritzie who loves to be part of the action.

Elevated shelf to keep plants on that attract slugs. copper strip around it. The dead-looking plant behind it is a Discorea bulbifera (air-potato) that is dormant.

LOL Donna, It would be a bit "warmer" down here in PA, that's for sure.
