I have admitted my addiction and I think it is the first step to recovery.(whatever that means) A lot of my time is consumed with thoughts of brugmansia and I dont know why. the flowers are beautiful but that doesnt seem to explain the obsession.anyone else?
addicted to brugs
Oh, that's obvious; they are the queen of flowers; beautiful, abundant, great perfume, I would almost dare to say queen of ALL living things!
Christie
I am jumping in here to argue that I don't think it is any of those things that cause the addiction!!! I am an addict and haven't had a bloom yet...To smell, admire or anything else! Brugs and I were introduced in June when I saw the first picture and went on to view more and more...had to have ONE... bought ONE. It managed to hang on through our terrible hot dry summer (just barely) and really took off in the cooler weather in the fall...It Y'd and budded (covered in buds) and the frost got it before they could open! As I said I am an addict and I ONLY have 70+ now....all in the greenhouse doing very well... But I have not EVER had a single flower. So there is more to the addiction than flowers. I think it is the intrigue, the excitement and ANTICIPATION of the flowers... the collecting of different ones and the dreaming and the hoping they will bloom for you. It is so exciting!!!

lol my addiction started from searching for a deer resistant ornamental to plant in the yard. what kind do you have?
We can live on anticipation for years! I waited 2 years before I had a single bloom worth writing home about. Now we wait breathlessly for Spring to come, and after that's over we'll wait with great anticipation for the fall flush! Someone more logical would say "the heck with that" and plow them all under. Guess I'm not too logical. The beauty and scent of a nice bloom can uplift my spirit in such a way that I'm willing to go a long time living on anticipation of the next one.

For me.. it's one whiff and I'm gone.. Brug fragrance takes the whole world away. Especially when it's a first bloom on a seedling.. whoa.. nothing like it in the world.
I cant believe you havent had any blooms my mountain magic is a tireless bloomer I was going to offer you one but you already have one.
I have a love/hate relationship with brugs. I can see the day when I only have 1 or 2 in my yard. They are made to order for a gaud girl like me but they get so big and messy and the mites are such a pain.
Growing seedlings is the real thrill, just waiting to see what you get.
Ted,
all of mine are from cuttings I rooted over the last few months. The only one that I had as a plant in the ground was 'Serendipity' which is the one I bought after I was introduced to brugs in June. If you have a spare cutting of Mountain Magic I would love one even though I have one, and maybe you would want one of the others I have?
Carol,
That's an incredible list. How do you keep them all?Greenhouse? Big perfect yard?
Way cool...
I'm (almost) more in line with Yardqueen1948.
I have 2 varieties...a Pink "First Day"? and a Red ?Sanguiea?? with a lot of aphids...and a fair amount of ladybugs hopefully eating them all! No flowers yet but I am hopeful for all the work I've put into them. Not sure why I am addicted already except I saw and smelled one last summer...now I yearn for a blooming one of my own.
Not trying to beg (well maybe not too much) but if anyone could send me (or better yet Yardqueen1948) a Brug that might bloom this year) please do.!
I don't know Yardqueen 1948's address or real email...but anyone with 25 varieties and no flowers yet needs them much more than me...I'm patient (a little!) but she surely is. Somebody has to have something to spare that could bloom this year. Please send her some flowering plants...or I will in a few years!
Afterwards, I'd settle for a half-green stick... hoping for leaves. Glad to send/trade Butterfly Bushes (12+ varieties) vines, sweet peas, bamboo, ferns, seeds, etc.

Thanks....in March I'll have a few hundred flowering perrenials so please email/dmail if you have a spare.
Ray,
Yes they are in the greenhouse... Still doing very well except I had a couple that were really wilted today for some reason they were dried out. Surely from all of these I will get some blooms this year...LOL I got a late start with mine last year and the sommer heat nearly killed it... But this year I hope to see many blooms!!! After they all grow up and bloom I can send you cuttings. I will try to remember but if I forget... remind me!
Carol
Carol,
I have less in plants but much in hope! (plus I'm crazy enough to probably get a bunch more).
Thank you for your offer.(For now, I need to get my greenhouse finished...that or my house will explode from a plant invasion!)
I hope to send you a pretty red "blooming" brug this summer...If not, I've got some other fantastic flowers.
Take care...I'll stop back in a few weeks or so...
; )
Ray
Ray,
I know what you mean about plant invasion. My greenhouse is sooo full and I started my wintersowing and so now I have containers in rows outside of the greenhouse. Next will be the seeds I will start inside the house and I have big lighted shelf units for those. What will I do with all this, you ask? I will plant a lot of them and give a lot of them to my two daughters for their yards, and other relatives and friends. And anyone else who wants them. That is why I have some duplicates of my brugs. I did not know there was a red brug. Or at least not many. I think I saw a picture of a red once.
That is nice of you to offer to send me a blooming brug! I am also full of hope that mine will bloom this year... Maybe I have some that you don't have or some of my other plants. I have a lot of things now that I never heard of 6 months ago...LOL And I am 58 and have always loved plants! But DG has taught me a LOT.
Carol
