Slimy seeds

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Yesterday I removed three seed pods, my first, and found mature seeds in two of the pods and semi-mature seeds in the third. After soaking overnight, I tried to peel the semi-mature seeds but found them too slimy to hold onto. Is this normal for less than mature seeds? After destroying 4 or 5, I just gave up and planted them slim and all. Lol. The seeds are from the only two brugs. I had blooming at the same time, so if they do not germinate I will not be disappointed. The exercise was more to see if I could successfully pollinate then to grow out a good cross. The only bright spot in my despairing day was listening to Andrea Bocelli's latest DVD, Under the Desert Sky. Awesome!

Hey Tussee!! I was just thinking of you just this morning and wondered how you were doing. I never soak my seeds but I do wash them. Then I dry them and then I peel them. Once dry the slime goes away.

For immature, they can be so fragile it may be best to just plant them without peeling them. Lots of people plant fresh seeds without peeling at all for they tend to germinate quickly when so fresh.

I had read at Dave's that that slime is what prevents the seed from germinating in the pod.

Hey to you, Kell. Happy New Year! I arrived home two nights ago and now must acclimate myself from high 80's in Miami to freezing in Indiana. I can only hope the freeze is taking out some of those critters I fought endlessly last summer. Many thanks for your thoughts on my seeds - interesting note on the slime preventing germination in the pod. I almost threw my seeds out as the slime made me feel something was wrong with them. This year I hope to have a number of interesting brug. flowers to pollinate. Having good seeds to anticipate endless possibilities, will help pass our gloomy and cold winters.

tussee you were in my neck of the woods!! Isn't the weather beautiful here this time of year?

Gary, you are so right about your wonderful weather. I come down every year to exhibit at the Miami Beach Antique Show and usually stay over with several friends for a couple of weeks. This year we had to be back as soon as possible and it sure was tough leaving without having some free time to enjoy the blue skies and just right temperatures. Next year. Oh, and shopping at Bal Harbour, Lol.
