My aztec gold plumeria definitely rooted!!!

Lindenhurst, NY

Yippeee, it's got leaves growing. A nice woman shared this cutting with me (Hettie I think her name was, did I get that right?). it was a beautiful cuttting with a few tips and it's been in a pot in my sunny south window on a heating mat that my cat shares with the plant, and today I've noticed leaves are growing. I'm so happy. What are the chances I may be able to smell a bloom this summer? Any ideas?

Now that I know I can root these, I want to try Miami rose (hear the fragrance is awesome). Anyone have a cutting to trade? I can offer named african violet leaves, rose cuttings (I have about 50 roses I grow). Come summer I will have named daylilys to trade.

It's got 2 buds ready to open. I'm so very excited. It's never even been in the outdoor sunlight. It was a cutting I started on my windowsill.

Hi Maureen, congrats on rooting Aztec Gold! That's fantastic! Your chances that you might be able to smell blooms this summer are very good! Start fertilizing as soon as your last frost date has passed when you put your plumeria out in full sun. You'll probably need to repot as well sometime this summer. I have a inflo on my Aztec Gold right now which is in the greenhouse!

Congrats the AZ is one of my all time favs..
The AZ likes "Peters Super Bloom" or "Peters" 20-20-20.
It seems the more i feed her the bigger her leaves and flowers get..
An AZ growing in NY lol never would have imagine that..
:=)

Great news!!! We're looking forward to pictures of those blooms.

HI Clare. How are you? I'm very excited about this rooting. It was actually easy, I think the key that I followed very closely was to NOT overwater and keep on a heat mat in a real sunny window.

lopaka = appreciate the info on the fertilizer. I'll be sure to start when I bring it outdoors. Yes, we can grow them in NY, but you have to bring them indoors during the winter. and outdoors for summer. I like anything tropical! Eventually I hope to retire to Florida.

Dutchlady1 - thanks for the encouragement, I will definitely post a pic of this when it blooms. Can't wait...

UPDATE===========================

I'm so excited, I just today noticed there is an inflo (this is the thing with the flower buds on it, right?)
I'm so amazed, I didn't think this could happen so quickly on a rooted cutting.

I removed the heat made about a month ago when I was trying to root some roses (which are not doing anything) but I removed it from the roses because I think the Plumeria needs it more.

I have so pleased with the progress on this Aztec Gold.
Thanks for all the help and encouragement I've gotten from Clare and the other great people here. Is it possible that this Aztec Gold will bloom in my house?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Congratulations !! Maureen . Yes it can bloom in your home ! Great rooting !

Hi Allison. Thank you for the info, I'm happy to hear it may bloom in my house.

Congrats, Maureen! I'm happy for you! I have an Aztec Gold blooming in my greenhouse right now too! It is usually one of the first to bloom every season. If you can put your AG outside in the sun during the day, it would benefit from that greatly. Your blooms are likely to be very pale if it blooms in the house. Blooming takes a lot of energy, and unless you have a lot of additional supplemental lighting, your blooms won't be nearly as impressive as they would be outdoors. If your plumie is fully rooted, then it doesn't need the heat pad any longer. Congrats again on your inflo!

Great news Maureen!!

HI Clare. It's so freezing cold here that I can't put it outdoors for a few months. As soon as it gets warm it will be outside in the sun. I only keep it indoors overwinter so it will survive.

Duthchlady - thanks:-

Does anyone think this is the time to fertilize it, or should I wait a while longer?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Maureen, I didn't realize that it is cold during the day there too. You are right that it should stay indoors. If your inflo is just starting, it may not bloom until spring anyway, depending upon how fast it is progressing. A couple of people answered you about the ferilizer on your other thread about fertilizing. This is not the time of year to fertilize plumerias.

UPDATE

It now has 2 blooms getting ready to open. I never thought I would see this happen in my windowsill. I've never fertilized this, should I now since it's getting ready to bloom? I'm so thrilled I can hardly contain myself.

If I should be doing something, please let me know. All I do is water 1x a week = that's it.

Yippee! Congrats, Maureen! I would hold off on fertilizing until it is warm out in the spring and until your plumeria is outside full time. Does it have leaves? You'll be smelling fresh peaches in no time:-)

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Congrats on the AZ!!
:)

HI Clare. yes, it has some leaves. Some of them are curled funny, but I've inspected closely several times and I don't see any mites so I'm not sure what it could be. I think the blooms may start to open in the next 2 wks. I will wait till it's warm and it's outside before I fertilize. Thanks.

lopaka - thank you:-)

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Curled leaves could mean mites, Maureen. You might just want to wipe the undersides of the leaves with a moist hand towel or papertowel. If you think the leaf curl could mean nutrient deficiency, you could fertilize at half strength while it is inside the house if you want to.

Lindenhurst, NY

Thank you for the suggestion Clare. I'm going to do what you suggested, wipe the undersides with a moist papertowel, then fertilize at 1/2 strength.

I really am so glad you are always so helpful Clare

My pleasure:-) Bear in mind that I may be helpful but not always right! LOL! Oh, well, I try;-)

HERE'S ANOTHER UPDATE:

Well it is in full bloom, and it sure does smell like ripe Peaches. The flowers are amazingly beautiful. This is a really special plumeria. I am so surprised that it rooted and bloomed in such a short time. Plumerias are much easier to root than the roses I've been trying to root.

I have blooms floating in a bowl and they look so pretty. Plus the plant has about 5 open and about 8 more to still open.

I love plumerias!!

Cave Creek, AZ

Congrats on the flowers!!! Now you have to join us and start getting more plumeria. Be sure to take baby pictures too!

Congrats, Maureen! Can you post some pics for us to see?

Maureen I'm so pleased that the beautiful Aztec Gold is blooming for you and that you are enjoying it.
My big plant that is in the ground has just started its blooming cycle for the year too. Together with India, Kaneohe Sunset and my common white which has about 18 inflos in various stages and will probably bloom till Christmas!!
I LOVE SPRING!

Davie, FL(Zone 10b)

Good for you Maureen!
