I watched an enormous flock of these ducks yesterday - I was astounded at how many. Unfortunately, they don't come close to shore so even with the 300mm telephoto, I couldn't get clear shots.
Surf Scoters?
Yep, Surf Scoters. Very nice - there's about twice as many in that one pic as I've seen in my life! (it is quite a rarity on this side of the Pond)
Resin
Resin, there were at least 200 of them - I've never seen anything quite like it . . . frequently in a line (often single file!) and extended what I would guess as the length of a football field! I should have changed lenses, but I was so entranced I didn't even think of it until later.
This second photo gives you just an idea as to how many there were!
Yep, scoters often form dense flocks like that - over here, it is flocks of Common Scoters (looks very similar to your Black Scoter) which often form flocks of a few hundred. But if you really want to see Common Scoters, Denmark is the place to go, I read about one site in Denmark which is designated as an international 'Important Bird Area', because it gets 200,000 Common Scoters . . .
Resin
Omigosh - I can only imagine!!
Thanks, Resin.
oh what great shots. We have scoters to but haven't seen any. made my first outing yesterday
Hope you get to see them, Donna - they certainly are amazing . . . particularly in their numbers!
will probably have to travel to Gulfport to the big Ship Harbor or Moses Pier if I can get to it. Usually where i see them. Still so much going on in repairs and closed areas here
oh forgot to say. last time i was there I brought my camoblind so I could get closes ups of the ducks and other seabirds. Next thing I know this guy is coming up telling me I can't camp there ROFL!!!!!!!!!! I raised my camera and he laughed. Told him I was only going to be there a short time
I'd love a picture of THAT, Donna!!! Great idea, though.
What lovely Scoters! I wish that they would come here for a visit...you lucky, murmur ;o)
Thanks for sharing,
Kim
