January 19 - What up?

southeast, NE

Good morning! How is everyone doing? Lambing officially started last week. It was going well with a few minor glitches until yesterday. DH found a ewe that had lambed and both lambs were dead. One lamb looked like it was only partially developed so he thinks she had problems having them and 2nd lamb came backwards. He went out at 2:00 a.m. and found a ewe trying to lamb. The lamb was coming with one leg forward and one leg backward and he pulled it and it was dead. She did have a nice live second lamb. We have one nice big Hamp ewe that has big teats. Unfortunately they are so big that the newborn lambs can't suck. We bottle feed and then the lambs get lazy (and stupid). And this mom is very protective and doesn't want us to feed her lamb, etc. After a week of this, we are crossing our fingers that the lamb finally "got it" last night.

We're going to start feeding silage tonight. Just sits in my "craw" a bit as these cows could still be on corn stocks. I told my brother-in-law about the landowner telling us to get our cows off her land and he said it is too bad we live so far away (100 miles) as farmers call him and beg him to put their cows on corn stocks.

Weather is supposed to reach mid 30's today so a lot of snow should melt. However, it sounds like another front is coming through and we may get another 6 inches. Thankfully, we keep missing out on the ice. Kathy Jo - are you okay? Did you get in on that ice storm?

My aunt sent me an e-mail - her daughter lives in Tulsa, OK. The ice was so thick that my cousin and another person literally lifted a whole sheet of ice off her car. It was about 4 inches of solid ice.

Well I'd better get to work - lot's of big projects going on here.

You all take care!
