One of my favorites

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

This is one of my faves....got this from Aurika on ebay a few months back.
Forgot to look at the tag (it's at home) before I decided to take the photo, so will have to add the name tomorrow.

It's one of my favorites because (a) it's survived so far (LOL!) and (b) it hasn't gone dormant.

ooooh, nice one. Is it b. tangaloma? it has some nice colors in the leaves. We went to a begonia society meeting last night and got some real nice begonia starts!!
Cheering me up with this cold weather we're having.

Thanks, Lali!
That doesn't sound familiar....I'll get the name tomorrow.
This one I loved at first sight!

Wish we had such meetings 'round here!

How are your plants (and you!) handling that cold snap?

(Zone 1)

Love it Nan! Looks sorta like a trailer, like the Strawberry Begonia, which I don't think is really a Begonia. I have one, will have to go look at the tag. Back in a sec .........

Yeah, Strawberry Begonia is actually Saxifraga .... don't think they are related to Begonia's.

Anyhow, I love your plant!

Hi Lin!
Nope...not a trailer...that largest leaf on the left is (guesstimating, here) about 4" x 3.5".

Lali...now that I *think* about it....Tangalooma (with another o in there, lol!) sounds familiar.
You're good, girl!!

Hey Nan, I did ok with the f.f.f.f.freeezziinnnggg temps here since most of my tender plants were in my over-stuffed greenhouse and the last dregs of potted plants are sitting in my hallway riding out the weather for a few more days. So far I think I only lost my Cantua buxifolia. But there is a great source for more over in the neighboring town so all is not lost.
Sadly other fellow DG'ers lost a lot of well established plants as well as new plantings. We've been singing the blues in the CA forum.

Our citrus industry lost a billion dollar crop and the prediction is that the price of certain produce is going to more than triple due to the losses. Namely strawberries and avocados.

the begonia meeting was super. Kell and I came home with some fun stuff. There was a plant raffle, and for 15 dollars we got 12 tickets. Each ticket gets a begonia. Cant beat that eh?

Plus we got to do a bit of nursery hopping along the way. More fun. I picked up a few dieffenbachia and a nifty variegated prayer plant. (looks just like this one http://community-2.webtv.net/variegated/Plants/media/captureD24.jpg)

I have a b. 'Tangalooma' that I got at the Miami convention last year. I only bought a leaf, and have been nursing the dang thing ever since. It starts out great, like gang busters, gets about 4 to 6 decent leaves and then overnight it turns to mush. I cant figure it out. I thankfully put down a leaf before the last episode of wilting took place. But this cycle has happened three times now. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Glad to hear your good news, but sorry to hear of others' losses. I've been hearing about the citrus crop losses on the radio.

The raffle sounds like fun....and rewarding at that!

I've got to see your Dieffenbachias, as they're one of my 'loves'!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Hmmm...mine lost a few of it's largest leaves after I got it, but after it adjusted it's done really well.

I admit that I let it get quite dry between waterings, and it gets some 'very filtered' light from a south window....it's also (as you can probably see) 'in the company of' a few other plants, which gives it some humidity, but nothing extreme.

Wish I could help you figger that out?!

sorry for the dead link, try this http://community-2.webtv.net/variegated/Plants/
not sure who's site it is but when I googled variegated prayer plant, this one came up.
I'll get a shot of the dieff's I got. They're fun, and were only $3.98 so I couldn't say no. (of course each one was mesmerizing me and sending me subliminal messages 'Pick me, Pick me...'

Looks like 'Tangalooma' to me, too. It is one that seems to like it more on the wet side to me. It is also dropping old leaves at this time so hang in there.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Aha...Randy's!
I've corresponded and traded with Randy in the past...nice guy! (And quite a collection, don't you think?!)

I've got one of those!
Don't be surprised if it tries to go dormant on you....mine has done that a couple of times, but always bounces back....just don't overwater when it's 'leafless'.

Can't wait to see your Dieffs.....

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

LOL!! And here I'd just stated that I let mine get quite dry....hmm...

I do think Tangalooma was the name...thanks you two for verifying.

hcmcdole....have you found this one to be pretty 'durable'?
I've had so many begonias go dormant and I eventually lose them (either I forget to water or I overwater during dormancy) or lost them for other reasons....I'm hoping to find some good rhizomatous ones that will have some 'lasting' power!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Here's a shot showing the two I got yesterday. One is solid dark green with a white mid rib, and the other is spotted with a lot of celadon in the leaf.

OOhh...I likes!!
I think I have the one on the right.

I *had* the one on the left, it was another 'victim' during my son's illness.

That one's hard to find!!!
You done good! What size pots for $3.98?

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Here's a shot of just the one on the right. I love the greens in it.

They're in 4" pots. Here's another I've had for a bit. It seems happy - for now.
Those other two had the same name tag, so I dont know for sure which hybrid they are.

and lastly, the variegated prayer plant. (sorry to have gotten soooooo far O/T)

Nan, it seems to fairly durable as far as not dying but does drop a lot of leaves now which is typical of most begonias.

I have a six inch pot from Ace Hardware (no name but looks a lot like it) and a 4 inch pot from Aurika. I started a new one from a leaf (Ace). The one from Aurika dropped all its leaves and has started coming out again but the big one is dropping leaves left and right but the rhizomes look plump and healthy.

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Here is a shot of the six inch one this summer since it isn't anything to brag about now.

Love this one, it's still at my Mom's who babysat all my begonias while we were on vacation, have to go pick them up before they disappear into her yard!
Great link you gave there Lali, I bookmarked it, lots of wonderful variegated plants that father and son have! Funny how they are the collectors and the wife and daughter are the ones who roll their eyes when the make the run for new plants!
I am so in the mood for new plants now that I have so much frost burnt and probably dead. Good thing I am broke right now! Always happens after our vacation. Go figure.
