???Debudding???

Silver Spring, MD

Are there any comments on debudding and allowing the leaves and root system to develop? Other than SHOW, are there other "perks" to allowing a plant to establish before blooming?

I have been trying to get some plants grow larger. Is debudding the way to go?

Disbudding..yes!

Yes! Disbud new cuttings and young plants until they are the size and/or shape you want them. Disbud stressed plants until they are recovered :)

DISbud it is!!! It's a hard thing to do but looks like it is well worth it. How long do you disbud?

I was thinking about trying this, too! I have some really small plants that haven't bloomed yet, and I will try it, too, Nanna. Has anyone read that book called Growing to Show (or something like it that the AVSA sells). Is it worth the money? I am not interested in showing, but I would like to have plants that are big and symmetrical like that.

Hey Hadfieldp.

The book is totally worth it. So many tips and plain good basics. I'm with you. Don't think I will ever show but I would like to have plants that I could if I chose to. For me, the enjoyment comes from allowing the beauty of the plant to show through.

AND having the feeling that maybe I helped!

How is the disbudding going. Several said they were going to try it. Have you noticed a difference as yet?

I use to do it . But now I don't as life is so short I want to enjoy all the flowers I can !
Would be interesting to see pictures of other's plants with flowers, dated pictures then after disbudded pictures , dated notes/W pictures and follow up pictures of growth and bloom changes.
When you disbud good idea to cut the bud leaving tiny pice this way a new bug will grow on each side. Breaking off will casue a bud not to form there again.
Now my Russina Snow Leopard and my Guelph's Christmas both grew large and were in 5 inch azeala pots with the largest leaf suport ring I could buy from Rob's when I sold them for $25.00 each during last Summer I never disbudded them both started blooming very young age large bouquets of long lasting large flowers !
The new owner emails me once a week or so and they come to visit when can says they are doing exceptional well. Just heard from her last week. She said Guelph's Christmas was lopsided , and she fount a few good size suckers. She said she does not know how they sneaked up so fast but she as new babies growing now and Mom is back doing great !
She has a bloom stalk baby of Russian Snow Leopard growing for me and a baby of Guelph's Christmas !
Well anyways I never disbudded them and they grew large grownby leaf super young age.
I have also read not good to disbud trailers getting ready for show or big blooms wanted.
I'm not saying Disbudding does not work it doesit does.
Back few years ago I grew a large in hanging basket Shiawasee Trail and Thunder Surprise and I wanted them blooming for Mom's day for Mother in Law. They did got to her in full bud and blooming :)) when they were shipped to Mi :))
If I get a new plant and it is in stress and I re-pot or take off all soil and roots to re-pot I disbud other than this I keep all the blooms I can now a days.

Nanna, did you get a chance to read that article by Pat Hancock in the most recent AV magazine? It is a good one. Pam

Nanna, I am no expert on the disbudding thing, but here is a picture of the first plant I am trying it on.....it is called Chicago Flair. I will let you all know how it goes. Pam

Pam you grow the most beautiful plants !

Abilene, TX

Thanks. This one I bought from Robs. It has grown really well.

Silver Spring, MD

Hey Pam. Yes I did read the article. I enjoyed it very much. Your plant looks beautiful. Love the symetry. I can really see the threes. It looks very similar to the plants I posted above.

I continue to disbud. At one point I almost weakened but pinched them off. My plants are looking much healther. The ones that were loosing energy at the center have recovered. I have a couple that are still blooming. I think I will take turns so I have some blooming all the time.

Abilene, TX

Thanks. I am just going to disbud a few to see how it goes. Can't bear to do them all....

Hello,

Yes that book is well worth the money I paid for it on ebay. It is by Pauline Bartholomew. I doubt I would ever show any violets either but there is a lot of excellent info.
