You're invited!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

We are going to have our first ever round-up in Asheville at the NC Arboretum. Initially, we thought of folks in Western NC and the Upstate of SC. But North Georgia touches on NC is several places and won't be much further for interested gardeners to drive than folks living in Franklin, NC. So we would like to invite you folks in North GA. to come. The date is May 5. I am not good at connecting links but if you go to the round-up forum, and look for the thread for WNC & Upstate SC round-up, you will find us. Let us know if you can come and if you can, we have also started the swap list.

thank you, Janet.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

No, problem, I am trying to figure out a way to come to yours, just to meet everyone...we have one here I am goig to attend. I see Brenda (Wholyhosta) has posted on your forum, I met her this year, we don't live far from one another. I just love this site and would love meeting more of the members!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

then, "y'all come."

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

LOL. I have never been to one, but I am seriously considering bringing my Sister or a Friend. I love Asheville!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I love Asheville, too. My dad used to manage the Battery Park Hotel in the late 1930s then he was transferred to New York City, where my sister and I were born.
The downtown is lovely - lots of historic preservation and the setting is great. The French Broad River and its tributaries dominate many parts of the county and it's beautiful. I had to go to Marshall to visit a disabled friend with housework and writing checks, and he lives right on the river, not 50 feet away. The view from his living room, out through the sunroom to the river is spectacular, very entrancing.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Wow, that would awesome to have that view. He is blessed to have a friend that would help him, and to have that view! I have been several times to the Biltmore House, as well as to some of the surrounding areas. Stayed in a B&B one year that was very sweet, and stayed in one of the nearby towns in a cabin once that was cool too. In the mountains, and the town of course was very charming...I want to say Black something .... wish I could remember....it was a few years ago, maybe three or four years ago...but we loved it...walked around and really enjoyed the shops etc. I really want to go to the Springs area in North Carolina...I hear it is great! I would love to be soaking in a mineral spring right now...LOL Did you get ice or snow up there? We had a little ice on the trees but nothing serious on the streets etc.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I'm sure you're referring to Black Mountain. yes, we got a little ice a couple of nights ago, but my driveway didn't freeze over, thanks goodness, as I was scheduled for a colonoscopy. I don't know much about the mineral springs in NC, possibly because I consider them a bit of a hoax. Some underground water simply has more minerals than usual but it doesn't make it some kind of miracle healing water.
Black Mountain is an unusual town. There was an artist group, including some architects that lived in a complex that is now a Baptist retreat called Ridgecrest. One noted architect was Buckminster Fuller. The Arts and fine crafts still abound there as well as at the Folks Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are other religious retreats there; odd constrast to the artists colony. Billy Graham lives near Black Mountain.

Lula, GA

Hi, you two!!

Break it up and let someone else in here! ;0)!!

Janet, if you want to go with me, we can get into all kinds of trouble together!!! I love the Ashevill area too!

Brenda B

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Oh, Brenda, that would be wonderul!!! Yes, it was Black Mountain. We stayed in a cabin near the retreat you are talking about....it was really cute from the outside it was painted with big flowers, I have a picture somewhere..my kids said it reminded them of Munchkin Land...LOL I am not sure about the "healing" properties of the water, but I do love massage and soaking in a hot bath, and the mountains....so it has always had an appeal to me!!! Hope your colonoscopy went well...what a miserable test!!!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

it went pretty well. I am awaiting results of the biopsies however, but the doctor didn't seem very concerned. He just recommended Fibercon.....Betty

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Good to hear! I just hate that test, you would think we could find out without such an invasive test...of course I am sure there is one less invasive, but the INsurance companies are not on board with that test yet...or so I have heard.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I'm still a bit weak from the colonoscopy and so is my stomach. Had a day of driving and errands including a large grocery shopping. Boy, am I every beat.
Got seeds from Pinetree (flowering maple and a jar of aloe butter) and from John Scheeper's Kitchen Garden Seeds (poppies, heliotrope, and larkspur). I'm really gonna give my little greenhouse a work-out.
Some of the seeds are for a historic property, some are for the planters in front of our community center and some are for my own property. Unfortunately, I need plants that can take at least part shade and I'm not sure any of these 3 want anything other than full sun.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Well, good luck with the planting, and I sure hope you are feeling better real soon! Aloe butter? Is that for your skin? Sounds like something I would like!

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Yes, for the skin. It will stay on better in this form. It is however, semi-hard so I have it sitting on the top of my fridge, in the back, to stay warm and softer.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Where do you get it? Is it just pure aloe butter..it is difficult to find pure forms of most good things...they are always adding chemicals etc. to preserve them...

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

It's mixed with cocanut oil. I got it from Pine Tree seeds. Probably on their website.

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

cool I will check them out them...I also do coconut oil....I use it on my skin as well...it is really neat the way it melts on contact...LOL a little goes a long way...

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I just got mine and am going to try it tonight. I will let you know.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

Well, I just put it on. I can certainly say "a little dab'll do ya." I got it a bit too warm, almost liquid and stuck my finger in. There was enough to moisturize 3 people. It does feel great.

We go to Ashville frequently for weekend get-aways. One of our favorite budget locations is the The Mountaineer Inn , simply for the giant neon hillbillies!! It isn't too posh, but the owners are nice and they love to garden! Two years ago when we where there, there was a local native plant sale at the botanical gardens. I cleaned up on some nice, unusual native plants! It's a really great location for a trade!

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)

Are you going to go to the RU, GGG?

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I like the Mountaineer too. A pretty funny old motel, from back in the days when we called them "Motor courts." Please join us, GGG.

No can do May 5th, that is our BIG plant sale at church! I gotta be making the cashola to keep our greenhouse program running!

Sorry, wish I could. That's a great time to be in SC!!
